The other male's steps do not falter. "Kallen's. She came when Ohgi said that he would let me go outside as long as I promised to come back in. She tried to stop me and even went so far as to try and hit me - when those two things failed, she took out a small purse and unsheathed a knife to stab me with. I'll let you imagine the rest."
"Is she dead?" A million and one questions swirl in his head, mostly out of concern for Kallen and some out of concern for Ohgi. "Suzaku, did you kill Kallen?"
"No."
The answer is dealt to him swiftly and without remorse, but it makes Lelouch untense quickly. That means that Kallen must be being taken care of by Ohgi right this moment; the wound is likely to not be deep, and knowing Suzaku - he probably knocked her out right after and told Ohgi to tend to her wounds. He only hopes that he's right about that, because the moment that Suzaku is herded back into his room with the door shut Lelouch grabs Suzaku's shoulders and shakes him.
He thinks to say something, but he just - can't. Suzaku nearly gave him a heart attack right then and there and knocked the words right out of him when he had relieved him with the information that Kallen isn't dead. Kallen is an important asset, one that he needs alive and well in case they're attacked by (god forbid) the Royal Navy, and he can't risk her life. She will be visited later and tended to by himself to assert that she's alright, but right now he needs to be reassured himself that Suzaku isn't going anywhere.
It is like Suzaku can sense his panic and soon he feels hands removing his mask for him, throwing it to the floor so that those same bloody hands can hold Lelouch's cheeks. He is assaulted by the metallic scent quickly and it makes him curl the corner of his mouth in disgust. Suzaku has the gall to look amused at that.
And then, he says something that makes Lelouch feel like his entire body is a tall, skinny iceberg.
"Something like this wouldn't have even made Schneizel bat an eyelash." Lelouch finds that he can't pull away in time to evade the kiss pressed against his forehead, his bangs sweaty and stuck there under the insistent press of Suzaku's lips. "He would have taken me into a bathroom and cleaned me - like he did every time he found me dead on the ground, or on the floor laid out for everyone to see. He'd check me over to see if I had any lasting damage and pull out whatever killed me, taking special care to pick out any pieces that might have been lodged in my body. Sometimes, he'd do it when I was awake and aware and I'd take it because while Schneizel is a selfish man when it comes to me, he's also a very protective, very kind man."
In other words: Schneizel takes care of Z.Z. in the most morbid sense - like a lover would, and Z.Z. lets him.
Chilly, Lelouch shudders and wrenches himself away from Suzaku's hands, listening to Suzaku chuckle bitterly before he continues with what he had been saying, "Schneizel el Britannia... he certainly knows how to put his past away and behind himself. He's cut so many ties that it's hard to know who he really trusts. There is no doubt, however..."
Suzaku approaches him and pins him to the wall, hands on either side of his head. Lelouch finds that he is positively terrified of the look in Suzaku's eyes, petrified thinking about the possibility that Suzaku will - indeed, without remorse or care - kill him.
Perhaps that holds some truth. Z.Z. kills no one if he is unprovoked, but the moment he's poked or prodded in his cage he warns them and then, should the problem persist, he tears them apart. It's as simple as that. The only people that he hasn't killed after being provoked and attacked by are limited to just three: Schneizel el Britannia when he had woken up from a night terror in his youth and laid his hands on Suzaku without really knowing, still half asleep; Lelouch vi Britannia upon first meeting Suzaku and getting to know him, giving Suzaku a good slap as a reward for his poisonous forked tongue; and, today, Kallen Kouzuki when she had tried to stop Suzaku from taking a look outside.
