Question of the Miss Manners sort...

Yesterday, I went out to the Cheesecake Factory with some old co-workers of mine, for lunch. I ordered a lunch portion salad and a glass of water (because I prefer drinking water most times). i suggest one of two things:

1. just pay for what you ordered and say nothing. often, the one with the bill will count out the money, see that there isn't enough, and assume that he or she calculated wrong. then he or she will ask everyone to pitch in another buck or two, so you only end up paying one more dollar and everyone else ends up just paying for their own meals. i've done this a couple times when i haven't had enough money for a tip or something. works like a charm.
WARNING: this only works when there is a larger group of people (5 or more). in this case, people are throwing money in the center of the table in a pile so the counter doesn't notice who is putting in how much money.

2. if you feel like a weasel doing the first option, try this: when the group agrees to split the bill, pipe up and say, "sorry, guys, i only came prepared to pay [insert dollar amount here]. do you mind if we just pay for our own meals?" if they make some asshole comment like, "but it's only four dollars more," you can make a witty young-person joke like, "well, four dollars is a fortune to a college student!" usually, the parties involved will get nostalgic for their college days, laugh, and share some story about saving quarters for laundry or something like that.

good luck.
