Megacon 2010 Report

Mar 15, 2010 22:26

I’m always exhausted after a con. Any of you that see me at one notice that I’m always loud, big smiles and really ‘excited’. I’m not faking it rather, I’m packing what I normally put in over a week into just 2-3 days. So for the next week I’m be kind of out of it, maybe minor updates here and there but for the most part, chillaxing.

The con seemed to have a lot more people then previous 2 years I attended and the neighboring conventions (cheerleaders lol) had some interest in mega (some bought one day passes to check things out or take pictures with cosplayers).  The atmosphere was good for the most part but I feel there has been a thing that I’ve been thinking of when it comes to cons.

I’m glad I broke even though most of it being from commissions instead of selling. I sold about 5 items only.  This is fine because it is megacon ie a mix media mostly with American entertainment. What I thought was weird is that even though it was a significant increase in attendance and I spent the whole con at my table I didnt see an increase in sales. Infact, talking to a few artists most said the con was ‘weird’. Friday was really slow in terms of sales (but a lot of lookers and traffic), I wasnt there most of saturday but sunday at the last hour or 2 everyone felt they ganged by last min shoppers.  Previous years with less attendance gained me more items sold…

Some of us (artists/venders) were worried for most of the weekend. A recent Art & Story podcast mentioned about the ‘atmosphere’. This past year at cons feel more and more like a big expensive block party. I’m not just talking of people not buying my stuff, I’m talking of things to do at the con. I see more people wondering around screaming then (even semi) filled panel rooms. I’m tired of reading the program guide and seeing ‘get to gather of _insert show/movie/game here_’ or repeats of the same panel several times.  Just saying, you paid to get into this do something that you cant do on your normal  free time.

Megacon isnt an expensive show for me to attend, its about a $100 investment and well, thats what I make. However, I wouldnt recommend it a con to go to if you have to pay for hotel, other travel costs or pick between a con closer to you with about the same attendance.

I’ll upload all my commission sketches later.

I did meet people from online, thanks for visiting. I completely forgot to take a picture of us selling at the table, sorry for that.  I may or may not be in orlando for the next megacon but I have other cons I plan to attend next year and metro is looking plausible.

We’ll see

art, business, conventions
