OK, I'm bringing in new characters. Say that Lyn-Z and Gerard use the practice space after Victoria and Gabe on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they do [insert some vaguely edgy dance style, I'm afraid you'll have to bring all the actual knowledge to this partnership], and Lyn-Z's got into the habit of idly watching them while they finish up and she does warm-ups.
So Vicky-T storms out and starts walking, and realises, mortifyingly, that she's left her bag behind. So she sort of creeps back in, terrified Gabe's going to be there still, but instead finds Lindsey, practicing backbends over the bar. And Lindsey flips upright and sits up on the bar and curls her knees around and says "You guys could be fantastic if you were actually dancing together, you know."
And Victoria just kind of stares at her because. She knows. They were fantastic, what they were doing was fantastic, and Victoria just wants that back, so badly. And training together without it is so much worse than not training together at all. And ... what if it was real? What if Gabe was something like what she thought he was?
Oh man I want Lyn-Z and Gerard to do like a Electro Jazz/Crunk/Hip Hop fusion or something. With like popping and locking and like matrix style back bends and shit. That'd be so fierce.
Ok, so like Victoria calls Nate for advice and he's like You know what? You sound like you're scared and Victoria is like no I'm not and so Nate says "Remember when you got the lead in Sleeping Beauty? and William was being a total bitch and sabotaging the Pas De Deux because he wanted Greta to be Aurora?" and Victoria says "Well yeah, he was being a total douche about it" and Nate says "Exactly, William was being a douche and instead of running away you told him to suck it up and then you went and danced your fucking ass off" and Victoria is like "What's your point?" so Nate is like "Vicky you've never let anyone psych you out before so why now?" and then Victoria stops and thinks about what Lyn-Z said and what Nate said and sighs "I need to get over myself" and Nate says "That's my girl"
So the next practice Victoria brings her A-Game and they pull off the lift on the third go.
Gabe can tell there's something different as soon as she walks in. And they dance and it takes off and when they stop for a breather Gabe grabs his water bottle and leans against the wall and stares at Vicky-T stretching out a cramp with her hair all in her face, breathing hard, and thinks, stunned, I'm so completely fucking in love with you. Fuck.
I am really starting to feel my complete lack of cobra icons here
SO maybe Vicky-T looks up and Gabe is staring at her and she smiles at him and he's like "So,um,again?" and they're maybe incorporating some Tango inspired dance moves so Victoria's does a pirouette and then finishes with a leg hooked on Gabe's hip and then she kinda has to lean back a bit and slide down his body and Gabe is trying really hard to concentrate but it's really fucking hot and when he hold out a hand to pull her to her feet and into another lift his hand slips and she falls and there is like this silence and he's kinda waiting for her to yell at him or call him an asshole but she just laughs, pulls herself to her feet and says "Ok let's take it from the top" and when she turns, he takes a deep breath and is like "Yep totally fucked"
The thing is, though, that Gabe still doesn't actually get what he did wrong before, and dance rival girl is still around, and still flirting with Gabe. And for him, it's basically, he doesn't even notice her, not when Victoria's around or even on the other side of the quad, but for Victoria, it seems that he's letting her flirt, encouraging her even. And so she just decides, okay, Gabe is flirty, and they're friends, and they're fucking awesome partners, and there's sexual tension, sure, but Gabe probably has sexual tension with everybody. Gabe probably has sexual tension with his fucking bedroom door. So off the dance floor, Victoria's determined that they're going to have a total bro vibe going, no sign at all that Victoria wants anything else, because she is above all that.
Gabe is kind of despairing.
(ETA: ALSO, yes yes to the tango and the sexy slide that turns into falling over, and also YES to Lyn-Z and Gee dancing Electro Jazz/Crunk/Anything else my eyes are totally starry.)
So then the Dance Rival girl is always hanging around trying to intimidate Victoria and Victoria is just too fucking busy for that bullshit. Between dance classes, school, homework and practise with Gabe, she doesn't have time for Gabe's...whatever. So she takes the higher ground. Until of course Dance Rival corners her in the bathroom and is talking shit and Victoria is like "Listen here you Britney Spears wannabe. If you think for a second, that I'm intimidated by your cheap and tacky dance moves you're dreaming. The running man is sooo nineties and baby, if you're not doing it with a sense of irony than you're not doing it right. So either bring it or step off" and walks out.
and it's so much easier now to pretend that she doesn't care about Gabe flirting or whatever it is he's doing with Dance Rival, because as long as he's dancing with Victoria that's all she cares about.
But Gabe doesn't get it because Victoria has always been really focused but now she's like a woman possessed and it's kinda terrifying (and really, really hot) but everytime he tries to talk to Victoria about something that isn't dancing she kinda freezes up or changes the subject or has to leave really quickly.
if you're not doing it with a sense of irony than you're not doing it right. So either bring it or step off" and walks out.
Ahaha omg yes ♥
So, OK, but this is a teen dance movie AU, so rival girl is not finished. We're going to get an act of sabotage in the finale. I'm thinking maybe - how about if she gets Gabe locked in a bathroom before they can meet up for the final night of the competition? And Vicky-T is frantic, because he can't not show up, he fucking can't, and rival girl wanders by and gives her big innocent eyes and says, "Did Gabe not show? Oh, baby, somebody should have warned you about guys like him. You can never rely on them."
Oh man yes and Victoria is pissed. Because everything she thought about Gabe, how he is sweet and kind under all of the layers of like fluro and attitude is turning out to be bullshit.
So she sees Alex and Ryland and she just totally loses it at them and Alex is like "No wait, Gabe wouldn't not show up. Something must have happened" and Victoria is just tired and then Ryland is like "No seriously. He'll be here. Just, be ready to dance ok. We'll find him"
So Victoria is seriously considering walking away but she can't because for some reason she believes Alex and Ryland so then their names are called so Victoria goes down to the dancefloor and Gabe isn't there and she's standing there looking like an idiot and people are just looking at her and laughing and then she's about to leave when Gabe appears at her side and he's takes hold of her hand and gives it a squeeze before moving into their opening positions.
How about Victoria goes out on the floor and she's waiting, and Gabe's not showing, she's humiliated and the organisers are giving her impatient/sympathetic/pissed off looks and beckoning her over, and then Nate, Alex and Ryland skid into the hall and Nate runs breathless up to whoever's in charge (please ignore the fact that I'm sure real dance competitions don't work this way) and makes wide sincere eyes and says that Gabe is late because he had to help a pregnant lady to the hospital, but he's texted and he'll be here in thirty minutes if they could please, please move his and Victoria's slot back.
And it's the most ridiculous story in the world, but Nate is so earnest and believable, somehow it works. But Victoria knows Nate, and she knows what his lying face looks like. But she lets him tug her off the floor and then turns and hisses at him "What are you doing?" and Alex and Ryland and Nate tell her they've been looking for Gabe everywhere and they haven't found him but they will, Victoria has to have faith. And she just stares at them.
Only then she sees rival girl over their shoulders, her mouth pulled up into a smug amused little bow and suddenly Victoria's mind goes still and clear. And she knows - she knows this girl is somehow responsible.
She marches over and just looms, and the girl ... sort of wilts. And it takes more than that, but the four of them together kind of prowl around and there's dangerous repartee and eventually the girl breaks and tells them sulkily that she maybe saw Gabe go into a bathroom.
When they break the door open Gabe has managed to worm halfway out of a tiny window, but he's stuck. Ryland tugs on his legs and he slithers down and stares up at Victoria and laughs helplessly and says, "This is not the most impressive I have ever been." And Victoria pulls him to his feet and accidentally falls against his chest as they get steady and then she's just laughing, overwhelmed with relief and nerves and excitement and she throws her arms around his neck and twirls. And then she's tugging him out of the room, because hey have a dance competition to win.
Ahaha okay and this one was stupidly long because I have to actually leave work and go home now. I'm only here so late because I wasted time this morning making this picspam. Er.
So then they get out to the dance floor and they fucking own. They pull all the moves that they'd been struggling with off and it's somehow more because it's like they are thinking with the same brain and it's like all of the tension and the flirting and the drama and just everything is coming together.
They are out of breath and holding their final pose and everyone is clapping and Victoria looks so happy and so beautiful and Gabe wants to kiss her but he doesn't because he thinks that if this is going to happen, if he's going to make a move he shouldn't do it like this, in front of hundreds of people. It needs to be done properly.
But Victoria felt like Gabe was about to kiss her, out there on the dance floor. She tells herself she's glad he didn't, because she was so euphoric and so happy with him and the world that she would have kissed back, for sure, and that would obviously have been a bad idea.
Ok, so they win the competition and they are totally psyched and everything. Then Monday rolls around and it's weird now because Gabe doesn't know if the whole "After the competition we're done" thing still applies and Victoria isn't around very often because she's rehearsing for a ballet production and all of her time is either in class or rehearsing.
So Gabe is kinda...lost. He misses Victoria, he misses talking to her and hanging out with her, but everytime he attempts to talk to her she can't talk and he still really, really wants to kiss her.
So somehow he gets Nate's phone number (possibly of Alex and Ryland, because they've kinda adopted Nate) and he finds out that Victoria is dancing in the principle role in Giselle (which side not is my absolute favourite ballet, ever) and that it opens on Friday night. So Gabe gets Nate to get him tickets.
Anyway he goes to the performance and Victoria is amazing. Like he always knew that she was a good dancer but when she's on the stage it's like she's not just a chick going through the motions, it's like she's breathing and floating on the music, like it's part of her not just an extension of the dancing and it's the most awesome thing Gabe has ever seen in his life.
Nate's arranged to sneak him backstage after the show and Gabe suddenly finds himself really fucking nervous, because this is it, he is totally about declare like, his intentions or whatever, but then Nate is pushing him into a dressing room and Victoria is standing there and she just raises and eyebrow and smirks and it's like the first time the met all over again except this time Gabe does what he should have done ages ago and moves forward and kisses her.
He is totally psyched when Victoria kisses him back.
