bah its late but i feel compelled to update.
monday i got lost 3 different times. once on my way to an art auction that i got all dolled up for. i must've walked up and down the length of oxford street 5 times before i realized that i kept passing new bond street because like so many english streets its name changes from one side to the next, very frustrating!!
after not finding sotheby's for the umpteenth time, i decided i needed to get a drink at the nearest pub. well, there were people standing outside (apparently waiting to get in). at least thats what people do in america when you're waiting for a table, you stand around outside chatting and smoking, right? so like a dummie i go in and ask the bartender,
"excuse me, but do you need a reservation to get a drink at the bar?" he looked at me like i was from mars.
"reservation??" he asked in disbelief.
"yeah there are people standing around outside?"
"ahh smoking..."
"right, yeah...sorry i didn't know" i mumbled, keeping my head down and quickly asking for a stella.
even though that night was a bust, i did end up successfully attending the christie's day auction which was fun for about 20 mins. one piece of art sold for 600,000 pounds which is over a million dollars. most of the high bidders were throwing their monetary weight around over the phone via christie's reps so it wasn't as fun as getting to eye the kind of person who can easily blow half a million on an unimpressive contemporary drawing of some squiggly lines with heads.
the national gallery was just ok. i feel less passionate about art than i used to.
i don't know about this london thing. its so gray. worse than portland. london has the kind of gray that never lifts. it just stays dark and dreary the entire day. perhaps all this solitude is getting to me.
after 4 days i've realized that traveling alone is well.....lonely.
