Chapter 7. The one he chose.
30.
29. 28. 27…
It’s never complete. He is-
Never will be-
May be? Might be?
No. Never.
22. 21. 20…
Don’t budge. Yet.
Now’s not the time…
Or is it?
12. 11. 10…
Mada.
3. 2. 1…
It’s time… Demo boku wa…
“TEGOSHI!!!!!!!”
That voice. It’s distorting his wonderful dream… An endless tunnel… An endless darkness where he felt the kind of belongingness he haven’t felt since-
“Wake up!!!!”
“Mada…” Tegoshi groaned as he tried to go back to his dream world by hiding his face beneath the bright yellow pillow he was holding.
“Tegoshi Yuya, are you planning to be like this for the rest of your life?? For heaven’s sake, I can’t take care of you for that long!”
Tegoshi sighed under the covers. “I’m not asking you anything Mas-Ah!!”
Without another word, Massu lifted his cousin off the bed and into the sitting room, dropping the younger man into the couch. “I’ve had it! I told you 30 seconds is my limit!”
Tegoshi smiled sheepishly at this. “Gomen ne, Massu. I promise to stop being childish from now on!!”
Massu suddenly had an urge to roll his eyes and lecture the younger man again for he had done this ‘apologizing’ for a million times already and yet, he still stays like this. Massu knew this’ll happen again even if he did forgive his cousin for he knew that if the real problem isn’t fixed then there’s no hope for the other minor problems to be solved as well.
“Tegoshi,”
“Hnn?”
“Do you want me to take revenge for you?” Massu asked, serious eyes meeting nervous brown ones.
Tegoshi was startled by this question but he immediately shrugged it off, trying to look calm. “What do you mean by that?”
“That guy… Yamashita. It’s all his fault, right? Well, you can’t continue forever what you’ve been doing this past few months… That’s why-“
“That’s why what?” Tegoshi’s voice was distant. Clear, yet small like that of a child’s-or maybe it was really a child speaking for Tegoshi is one, one way or another. “What I’ve been doing… What do you mean??”
“You… You’re not yourself anymore, Tegoshi. Ever since that guy-that bastard left you… And I thought he love you!!” Massu gritted his teeth, trying to contain his anger towards his cousin’s former lover. “Just let me see him once, Tegoshi… I’ll make him pay for what he did to you.”
Tegoshi suddenly let out a shaky laugh hearing his cousin’s remark. He shook his head and smiled weakly at the surprised Massu. “He did nothing, Massu. It was me…It had been months since he left and I really should’ve gotten over him now but… Well, let’s forget it…And please, don’t ever show up in his doorstep and say things and-”
“-punch him telling him just how much of a prick he is?”
Tegoshi bowed his head as he felt tears stinging in his eyes. Why? Why am I crying over this now…?
Seeing how much pain his cousin is experiencing that time, Massu calmed down a bit, laying a gentle hand on his cousin’s shoulder. “See what I mean? How that guy changed you…”
“Massu, it’s not him. I should’ve forgotten him and get over this infatuation when he left me… I knew it’s going to happen soon anyway. Knowing that, I should’ve been prepared, ne? But now… it had been 4 months and I still proved to be a failure…”
“Tegoshi…”
Tegoshi roughly brushed off his tears with the back of his hand, turning to plead to his cousin. “Please??”
Massu bit his lip seeing just how much his cousin still loves that guy… Tegoshi might not know it himself but Massu could see it. His cousin will never get over his ‘infatuation’… for he is ‘in love’. With this knowledge, Massu knew that saying no to his cousin would only hurt him more leaving him no choice but to watch… To watch and pray that Tegoshi could one day, forget this guy and move on with his life again.
------
“Ame da…”
“Huh, so it finally came again…”
Tegoshi blinked in confusion at Massu’s response. “Again?”
“The rainy season… I told you I hate rains, didn’t I?”
“Oh…” Tegoshi said in lack of other response.
Sou ka. It’s around this time… So it’s been a year now, eh? Somehow…it makes me sad… I wish I had-
“OI!”
Startled by Massu’s sudden raise of voice, Tegoshi instinctively moved to the other end of the couch. “Should you do that?”
“Only if the person I’m talking to isn’t listening…” Massu teased; but, almost immediately, his soft expression became serious again. “About yesterday… I made a mistake. I saw something-“
“Forget it,” Tegoshi interjected. “I don’t want to talk about him again…”
A slight crease formed between Massu’s eyebrows. “You sure?? I… I want to tell you something about what I’ve found-“
“It’ll only hurt me more if I continue to think of him… to think of someone who is already married, ne?”
Massu cleared his throat awkwardly. “Tegoshi…”
“Ma~~ I might not have seen or read any news of it in the magazines and televisions but…really, do I have to? He had chosen her in the end anyway…”
Realizing that Tegoshi will never hear him out, Massu sighed heavily, placing a 3-month-old newspaper on the kitchen table. “I’ll be leaving now… But I want you to read this.”
Tegoshi could only nod at this but it’s obvious that his thoughts are far from what Massu had been saying. Without even taking a glance at the newspaper, Tegoshi stood up and sat beside his bedroom window, remembering that rainy night…remembering his first ever encounter with the thing called ‘love’.
------
*knock*knock*
The light rapping sound at the door woke Tegoshi up from his nap. He straightened and sat up feeling slightly dazed from the sudden awakening. He had just been dozing off and yet, here comes another stressor of his. With a yawn, Tegoshi checked the wall clock to see that it was already half past 11. Knowing that he dozed off around 11, Tegoshi stood up with a low growl to open the door and yell at whoever that is on his front door for waking him up.
Tegoshi opened the door with a dark frown clearly visible in his porcelain-like face. “Geez, don’t you know what time…it is…” Tegoshi asked irritated, faltering in the end as he saw who the person on his doorstep is.
“I’m sorry… I… I just want to see you but… It seems like I really shouldn’t have come,” YamaPi explained, smiling awkwardly at the younger man before bowing his head low and turning to leave.
For a few seconds, Tegoshi could only gape at the other man as if the sight of him was too much for him to hold causing his brain to cease from functioning. It was only when YamaPi turned to leave that Tegoshi finally collected himself again, arms reaching out to embrace the other from the back and stop him from leaving.
“Why?” Tegoshi asked softly. “If you wanted to see me, you could’ve done so long before now…”
With his hands wrapped around the other, Tegoshi felt YamaPi stiffen a bit before relaxing again, shoulders slumping slightly. “I had… other things to do that’s why I couldn’t see you earlier.”
A pause.
“Yuya,” YamaPi called hoarsely causing soft tears to form in Tegoshi’s large, brown eyes.
“Yuya,” YamaPi repeated, turning around to have a proper lok at Tegoshi. “Do you hate me now?”
------
The cold and wet weather outside was forgotten as the two young men took their sips of hot chocolate inside the apartment which has a warm ad somewhat comforting ambiance that helped the two men calm their nerves a bit.
As YamaPi sat his cup down the table, his eyes wandered around the familiar sitting room, the kitchen counter, the messy stack of magazines and book in the corner shelf-everything. He felt something tug at his heartstrings as he remembers the time he spent there with Tegoshi. YamaPi narrowed his eyes slightly as he tried to catch a glimpse of the bedroom from where sat but eventually lowered his gaze shyly as Tegoshi finally spoke.
“Why would you think that I hate you?”
YamaPi sighed. ”Because I made you wait for so long,”
Tegoshi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry or slap the other with this reply. “Don’t you think that I should hate you for other-stronger-reasons than that?”
YamaPi made no other reply at this annoying the younger one in response. “Let’s make this clear,” Tegoshi started. “You sneaked here to see me after leaving me four months ago when you’ve already married another woman, not thinking about other’s feelings-my feelings-just to satisfy your need? Is that it? Well then, good for you. You’ve succeeded and made my life more miserable now…so now, could you please leave?”
“…Chigau.” YamaPi said after an awkward silence. He stood up, pulling Tegoshi with him, his eyes searching Tegoshi’s as he place a steady hold on the boy’s shoulders. “So you’re mad…”
“What? Am I supposed to be happy that you’re here…after four months... Did you come here to mock me?? Slap me in the face with the words ‘I’M MARRIED AND I ONLY CAME HERE TO SEE MY TOY.’?” Tegoshi burst out sarcastically.
YamaPi frowned but remained calm, knowing that something must be wrong causing Tegoshi to be mad at him like this. “You… You’re not watching or reading any news at all, are you?”
“What does it have to do with us?” Tegoshi muttered in annoyance but deep inside, he knew YamaPi is right. He hadn’t been watching or reading anything lately to avoid seeing news about YamaPi’s marriage and the likes.
“I get it now,” YamaPi concluded, smiling as he saw the confusion swirling in those brown pools. He looked around and saw a newspaper in the kitchen table and immediately headed towards it, smiling again as he saw the date on the paper. “Here, try reading it.” YamaPi said, offering the newspaper to Tegoshi.
Tegoshi resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “The date is 3 months ago…”
“Perfect then, go on… flip it.”
Tegoshi really wanted to end all this and sleep, wake up in the morning and find out that this is all just a dream but he knew that even this ‘dream YamaPi’ wouldn’t let him do that. Tegoshi flipped the pages lazily, eyes wandering aimlessly from page to page until one page finally caught his attention. His eyes grew large as he re-read the title of the news on that page.
You’ve got to be kidding. This is…
“…Yuya?”
At the sound of YamaPi’s voice, Tegoshi raised his gaze from the paper, a clear question displayed in his eyes. “You aren’t… I mean, you didn’t… You didn’t marry that girl?”
YamaPi smiled, gently cupping the other man’s cheek before leaning in to claim those lips he’d been dreaming of for so long in a quick, chaste kiss. When he drew back and saw how red Tegoshi is, he chuckled lightly saying, “You’re my only love… How can I marry someone else?”
Once again, a look of confusion crossed Tegoshi’s face. “But…That time, you left me…”
“I told you, didn’t I? I have ‘family matters’ to fix, not ‘family-making matters’…” YamaPi teased.”So all these time… You thought I left you for good?”
“D-demo…” Tegoshi stuttered trying to clear other things as well. “Will your family get mad at you?? Will that Horikita Maki-san ever going to bother us again? Or will-“
“Hush…” YamaPi said, placing a finger on Tegoshi’s lips. “The reason why I couldn’t see you is that I want to fix all loose ends first. A lot of problems arise when I decided to cancel the wedding between me and Maki-chan… Don’t worry, I made it sure that she understood my feelings before I went here… Also, I don’t want to see you yet since I feel that I’m not worthy of your love unless I… I become true to all things I did and so it took me this long to see you again.”
“Tomohisa…” Tegoshi muttered silently, placing his hands around the other to comfort him. “I’m such an idiot… Here I am, isolating myself and brooding all alone when I should’ve been more considerate of your feelings too…”
“Will you forgive me?” YamaPi asked after awhile.
Tegoshi smiled softly and tiptoed, kissing YamaPi on the forehead. “Silly. You didn’t do anything wrong… This has all been a misunderstanding after all…”
YamaPi felt the familiar rush of overwhelming happiness inside him as he began to lean down to plant another kiss on his lover’s lips only to be stopped again by the person in question. “What??”
Tegoshi’s eyes turned serious all of a sudden. “Well I forgot…You did do something wrong after all…”
“Ehhh?”
Almost immediately, the serious look dissolved and was replaced by a seductive grin on the boy’s effeminate face. “You did say it. You made me wait this long so I think that punishment should be done… thoroughly.”
YamaPi returned the grin as Tegoshi’s hands flew to unbutton his shirt; the rain outside falling even harder to the ground just as the two young men fall harder in love for each other.
And during that rainy November night, a love lost is finally found again.
