Chapter 4: Panic Stricken

Tegoshi sits on the window shelf. It was one of those rare occasions when he felt like he needed to be somewhere else but couldn’t be bothered to actually be somewhere else. By just separating himself from his bedroom with a curtain was enough for him to feel change. He certainly felt the change of space. It wasn’t long before his claustrophobia kicked in. He draws back the curtain and takes a final look at the view outside his window, the building tops that map a vector-ish skyline. He sighs as hears his phone bleep for what must have been the sixth time that morning.

Swinging his legs over the side he sits with his back to the window. He sighs heavily as he goes to read who the message is from. No surprise. Yamashita-san, ne?

Until he found out who Yamashita Tomohisa was, he would get a rush and run to his phone whenever he got a message but afterwards… Well, for the past three days he hadn’t replied at all. He simply read the messages and left them in his inbox.

How have you been?

Are you OK?

Did something happen?

I hope you’re well.

Those were the kind of things that he got. They were different from the previous discussions of TV shows and recent chart singles and funny stories about random strangers on the train. Now they were just questions concerning how he was, why he didn’t reply, if he would still deliver the package.

He sighs again and begins a message. To Shige. Shige will know what to do. Shige knows how to handle this kind of stuff. Ryo knows to handle this kind of stuff too, if not in a slightly more crude and blunt fashion,

“Tell me what’s wrong and tell me now. If it doesn’t fill up four seconds then it’s not a problem.”

“Nothing’s wrong,” Yamapi’s voice comes through muffled.

“You’re doing the window-curtain thing. I know something’s wrong,” Ryo walks over and briskly draws the curtain to reveal Yamapi curled up against the window pane. “Tell me now and I might give a damn.”

“OK…” Yamapi hops down and shows his outbox to Ryo. “See these messages?”

“Yeah…?”

“No reply,” Ryo took the phone and scrolled down.

“God, how many have you sent?” Ryo’s expression changes from slight shock to a ‘I can’t believe you just said that - I’m actually considering whether we should be friends’ kind of look when he hears…

“Those are just from yesterday and this morning… I had to delete the ones from the day before as there wasn’t enough room.”

“So? You’re better off without the idiot replying. He’s dangerous.”

“Ryo-chan~ Just… Pretend you care for ten minutes and give me advice,” Yamapi tugged slightly at Ryo’s sleeve and was met by a sigh and eye-roll. “Please?”

“Fine. I suggest you stop what you’re doing. Back off. If you like frisbee boy like you say you do then stop harassing him; it’s making you seem like a stalker and no one talks to stalkers apart from other stalkers and I don’t want to be classified as a stalker, thank you very much.”

Yamapi could understand Ryo’s point; maybe he should’ve stopped after fifty. Ryo would’ve said that he should’ve stopped after five.

“Ne, Ryo-chan, do you think that I should just go and see him?”

“W-what?  No! Whatever you do don’t do that. I’ll… Try and fix this. Yes, that’s what I’ll do - Yep.”

Now this was one of the rare times when Ryo was showing his uneasy nature and of course, Yamapi noticed it but he wasn’t going to ask why. If Ryo wanted to say then he would say, Yamapi would gain no merits annoying it out of him. Ryo does have his reasons though, even if he wasn’t willing to share them yet.

Ryo sighs heavily. That was close, he thinks. Even if he hated Tegoshi, he has to get him together with Yamapi. He has to. Otherwise he’ll look like an idiot and no one makes Nishikido Ryo look like an idiot.

So he made a mental list of the things that he had to do. First, he had to make contact with Tegoshi Yuya. He had to find out why he wasn’t replying. Then he had to get him to promise that he wouldn’t say anything to Yamapi when they went of into the sunset hand-in-hand. Ryo shivered a bit when the thought comes to mind. Think less of the details.

Meanwhile, Shige had gone over to give Tegoshi his support. He looks on worried as Tegoshi sits still and jumps whenever his phone bleeps with a new message.

“Ano… Aren’t you going to reply?”

“Huh? Why?”

“Well… He might stop if you reply?”

“But what should I say? Too many messages have passed for me to give a good excuse. Shigeee~” Tegoshi pushes and tugs at Shige’s sleeve, whining as he pouts.

Shige sighs. Perhaps this whole thing was more trouble than it was worth.  He promptly takes the package which is now under a mound of collected chocolate wrappers and leaves saying,

“I’m going to deliver this now and then it can all be over, OK?”

Shige marches out and still remembers how to get to ‘Yamashita-san’s’ house and along the way he thinks he can see the person in question heading towards him. He immediately shoves the package in the man’s arms,

“Here’s your package!”

“Excuse me?”

“From Tegoshi Yuya.”

“Why you giving it to me?”

“You’re not Yamashita Tomohisa?”

“No…”

“So who are you?”

“Nishikido Ryo.”

After untangling mismatched presumptions, Shige and Ryo come to realise three facts:

1. Ryo is not Yamapi

2. Yamapi likes Tegoshi

3. Shige is a rubbish spy

And they come up with one aim:

1. Get Yamapi and Tegoshi together

“OK, here’s the plan, I’ll get Yamapi, you sort out frisbee boy, tell him that you’re an idiot and made a mistake and then I’ll just get Pi to shush about the whole messaging thing and it should work out.”

“You think?”

“It better work out. Otherwise that package needs to disappear.”

Shige raises an eyebrow as he has no idea what Ryo is going on about, being perfectly honest, he doesn’t want to ask that many questions since there was an air of ‘I’m pissed off’ about Ryo.

They set about doing what they had planned, Shige apologising tremendously to Tegoshi, Ryo simply fuming to Yamapi and eventually end up with Tegoshi nervously standing on the porch, underneath the lantern he had praised so much before. He swallows, raises his trembling hand and presses the white doorbell. He exhales a long breath as he waits for an answer and he could swear that his heart nearly exploded when he heard the latch click.

“Tegoshi-kun?”

Tegoshi nods, he looks up in awe as he sees the package’s intended. Speechlessly he lifts the box in his hand and watches as Yamapi smiles when he receives it.

“Thank you. Um, would you like to come in?”

Hiding behind a car across the road, Ryo and Shige watch as Tegoshi walks in. Ryo nudges Shige out of the way to get a better look.

“Hey, I thought we agreed that I got this window and you get that one.”

“Whatever,” Ryo raises a hand to silence him. “Ah, look, he’s going in.”

They sit there for a couple of hours before finally deciding that things had gone well since Tegoshi hadn’t left in tears yet. Shige stretches out, works out the ache in his back that had come about through bad posture and he announces that he’s going home.

“Yeah? I’ll come with.”

“Excuse me?”

“If Pi’s getting some tonight so am I even if it’s with you.”

Shige gulps.

He can’t say no.

It turns out that Tegoshi is easily tired by nerves as he’s already asleep on the sofa. Yamapi watches as those shiny lips mutter along to the dream Tegoshi’s having and he strokes the fringe out of Tegoshi’s eyes. Tegoshi snuggles against a pillow, a small smile settling on his face after Yamapi leans down to give him a chaste kiss. Small steps, he thinks. Small steps like this and everything will be fine. His mind drifts off to the topic of the package and he carefully prises the wrapping off.

Inside is a note:

There was a 50:50 chance that this would work.

You really needed to get some to stop clinging onto me.

Ryo

P.S. Gifts for the future.

Yamapi doesn’t know whether to laugh or scream as he puts away the condoms and lube into a drawer hopefully Tegoshi would never open.
