Drink
“Hey Jayne… Jayne, ya gonna be joinin’ us fer another round then?” Mal’s accent had grown thick after tossing back more drinks than he rightly recalled.
Jayne shook his head, expression unreadable.
“Ain’t seen ya ever turn down a drink… make’s fer an unusual sight. Me drinkin’ and you not.”
“Had enough is all.” Jayne replied softly.
“Jay…” Mal was interrupted by River’s hand on his arm.
“Limits reached should not be pushed past.”
“Night’s barely begun, early yet.” Mal sounded nearly petulant, whiskey blurring his speech.
Jayne shoved back from the table, stalking back to Serenity nestled in the lee of a hill nearby.
Mal opened his mouth to stop the man, second time stopped by River, “Pressure to continue will result in burning up the night in an alcohol flame.”
Mal turned slightly clouded blue eyes to his Albatross, “Not been trouble afore…?”
“Can only drown past for so long before it erupts. Wisdom in letting the flame reduct to embers. Ursine temper unpredictable.”
“I think I’m two drinks past understandin’ ya…”
“She means to let sleeping bears lie Mal.” Inara supplied helpfully.
“Huh.” Mal rubbed his eyes tiredly.
“Open up the sky and see the light.”
“Huh?”
