Meet the New Voice Teacher

Hello, I'm the new voice teacher at Headstart in Mandaue. This is my first time to teach ever, especially a six-year-old, and it's tough because her voice isn't in tune, yet. But she's a very cute and smart little girl. She just needs to focus, focus, focus because singing is a mental thing, too. My voice teacher, Crystal, said that singing was more of thinking than performing, really. Wow, a revelation here. Lol. So it's serious multitasking.

Frankly, I was expecting to teach kids and teens who can already sing in tune. That would have been easier.

So Antoinette, my pupil, is a challenge. Luckily, Madame Alma, the owner of the school, came and checked in on us yesterday. She helped me with my pupil ('cause like, duh, she majored in piano and minored in voice--will have to find out if she did her masteral like her daughter, Amor). She led the course for a few moments. My pupil cried because she was obviously stressed out a bit. Lol. Gitabangan jud. No raised voices at all, just a little bit of perfectionism from Madame Alma. We were trying to make her get the correct pitch, but she's still off most of the time because I think she's still not really listening. So a lot of repetitions and emphasis took their toll on Antoinette, but I think the little one needed that push; otherwise, she'll never progress and never learn how to sing.

So Madame Alma left us alone towards the end of our hourly session. I was there hooting like an owl in so, la, ti and do so Antoinette would learn the head tone choerva-ek (will not get too technical *wink*) that she needs to do in order to get the right pitch. You have to make it fun for the kid, too, you know? So she's getting it, yes, and I think if she really pays attention and pushes herself, she'll master her Do-Re-Mi in time for the pupils' culmination day. Yay!
