Online Personae

I've mostly been using this LJ for leaving comments onto friends'/community journals, not for an LJ in itself; I had a weblog. However, I think I've grown to like the LJ format--and besides, it allows me to have a different persona than I've exhibited on the Serious Political Weblog (which I haven't updated since October, and which had at its peak maybe twenty readers). I suppose "Ceruleanshipper/Maureen" is my "informal" online persona; I've used "ceruleanshipper" as a handle in several bulletin boards and have almost reluctantly appended my first name to my LJ so I could identify myself to people I know in real life. "Maureen [Last Name]" is my formal persona; it's what I used on the Serious Political Weblog and it's indicated by the e-mail accounts I use professionally.

So why two personae? It's pretty simple--I'm not sure I want future employers being able to find "The Top Secret Diaries of Dr. Nora Kelly"* by searching for "Maureen [Last Name]". That's not to say that there's absolutely no way they couldn't--back in the dark ages, I wasn't so discreet about keeping the two identities separate. Although whether they'd be able to figure out if that "Maureen [Last Name]" was truly the "Maureen [Last Name]" they're thinking of hiring....

*Okay,
twisby, remember how I said "like Dale Cooper, but Southern and with a sense of humor?" Yeah :)
