backup and synch - recs?

Haven't been here for ages. Wonder if there's still anyone linked to this page.
I'm not much of a 'so how's everything going'-person, especially not to a probably non-existent reader list, so we'll skip that stage.

I'm much better with topical discussion. So -
can anyone rec a (free) utility for windows that can compare folder content and synchronise backups (but giving a lot of user control)?

I'm using CSDiff (http://download.cnet.com/CSDiff/3000-2248_4-10009023.html) for file and folder comparison, and it does excellent work, but it only produces a list of differences. This is excellent for comparing versions of documents and have it point out the different lines, but for folder backup it is a bit limited. It produces a list of 'new/same/modified' (so it clearly can check either the date or the content of files, contrary to the claims of the linked review), but that's a bit limited for backup purposes, as one has to manually go into all the folders to retrieve the files - which is a lot of time-consuming hassle. So, I need something useful to allow me to backup from the program interface.

Suggestions are welcome.
