The smoke monster was trapped by the light and Unnamed Brother's body jiggled it free? Does anyone know?

Someone on my FL said that MIB became the smoke monster, citing something he said about "the Devil" robbing him of his body and soul. Also, Smokey tends to take on the personality traits of the people he's impersonating, so ... at that time, he was still more like the unnamed brother.

I do see where they're trying to create a gray area with MIB and Jacob. There is no truly good or truly evil person. The choices we make dictate the sort of life we lead. Which is where I'm certain the flash sideways bits are going, because the characters are working through problems they worked through while they were on the island. With the successor thing, I think MIB's advantage was his curiosity about the world around him, whereas Jacob was content to just stay in his comfortable bubble. Someone who is open to confronting the unknown and using his own will to make a choice is better equipped to guard something as important as the Island.

The woman had to make hard decisions in protection of the Island, with killing the boys mother and then (attempted) MIB himself. Jacob could've never made decisions like that. As it was shown, he was a reactionary person motivated by personal issues. That's why he did what he did with MIB, killing him for killing the mother. It wasn't in the service of the Island but of himself.

As another friend said, it's even more set up for Jack being the one to take over the Island. His actions, for the most part, have always been in the interests of the greater good. He seems to have come to understand how important that is. Even as a doctor, it wasn't about the patients, it was about him. And his issues with his father and his self-confidence that motivated him. His time on the Island has helped him work through it and now he's in the headspace an Island guardian should be in.
