"Shit!" Kon stared up at the quickly descending spaceship. Kon had been cruising over Metropolis with Superman on their twice weekly patrols together. He'd probably cut back once school began and Gotham picked up in earnest, but for now, getting out of the Gotham heat was nice…mind it just changed to Metropolis heat, but change was good. Superman had asked that he patrol with him more often. Kon was pretty sure Clark was trying to bond with him or something, but since it did result in free food and some adulation, Kon was alright with it, so long as it didn't cut into his Tim time.
"We have to divert it away from the city," Superman replied calmly. He calculated the trajectory automatically and started flying towards the unidentified crashing object. He hoped it didn't contain anything malignant .
"Yeah, no shit, otherwise Metropolis'll be a crater. But if there's another Supergirl in there I'm quitting." Kon rolled his eyes, speeding up slightly to try to direct it to a gentler landing ground. He sometimes liked his cousin, but sometimes she was such a whiny brat-girl. He hoped Lian wouldn't grow up to be that bratty. He thanked every power that his own powers had gotten juiced and that Tim was his boyfriend when he was able to slow the stupid pod using his awesome Tactile Telekinesis skills. "What's in it?"
"Can't you see?" Superman asked. He'd thought Kon'd already developed X-ray vision. He could have sworn Kon had developed everything already. Hadn't he?
"Little busy trying to make sure that if there's something in it, it doesn't crash and crumple and burn and die," Kon replied tensely. Trying to hold back the natural forces was a stretch, even for his skills.
"A child." Superman smiled. He had a feeling it was a Kryptonian too. It felt Kryptonian in some indescribable way.
"Great, so letting this just use the last of it's momentum to hit the ground away from civilians isn't even an option," Kon sighed, using his Tactile Telekinesis to continue to slow the descent.
"No, not really. The writing on it is Kryptonian too," Superman observed. That probably was contributing to the familiar feeling.
"Great. y'know something? You really fail at being the last son of Krypton." Kon glared over at Clark. "Like a lot." Another one! Geeze, half of Krypton must have made it off the damned planet.
"I know." Superman rolled his eyes at Kon. Kon grinned up at him, and kept the descent steady as the ground came nearer and nearer. Finally setting it down in a field, Kon dropped to his knees, panting.
"Screwdriver?" Clark requested.
"Robin has it, why don't you use your heat vision thingamabob to open the blasted door?" Kon replied, eyes closed.
"I was trying to do this the easy way," Superman replied, before doing something with some control panel. The door opened to reveal a small child.
"The screwdriver isn't meant to be a crutch," Kon glared reprovingly. "Bats doesn't even let us take it out on patrol with us. It's an emergency situations only device."
"Sounds like him.”Superman nodded. ~~Can you understand me?~~
~~Yes, who are you please?~~ the child blinked up at them.
~~I am Kal-El and this is my son, Kon-El,~~ Superman replied. The child nodded.
~~Where am I?~~ he slowly stepped out into the sun, shielding his eyes. It was a lot brighter out in the fresh air than it had been in his pod…not that he remembered much more than the reentry.
"You know, it'd be nice if you were translating, Kal," Kon sighed. He wished Tim were here. Tim'd probably know what the hell Kal and the kid were saying. He ought to learn Kryptonian sometime. He wondered if the AI could beam it directly into his brain.
~~A small planet called Earth.~~ Superman blushed slightly. He hadn't meant to be leaving Kon out; it wasn't polite. He needed to set up a session with the AI to teach Kon the language as soon as possible, the way Kryptonian had been dropping in lately. "Sorry Kon, we were just covering basics."
"Can we cover basics somewhere that isn't about to be overrun by the government, I'm not really thinking dissecting the tyke'd be a good intro to earth culture," Kon suggested. If he was Kryptonian, he knew Clark would be all gung ho about adopting it and sticking it in Small-hell. Poor kid was young enough to think that was an awesome life too. "So's he Kryptonian?"
"I think so." Superman nodded, smiling. He liked not being the only one left. The companionship and lack of having to be careful with them was nice. Kara could use a few years of growing up, but she'd become a worthy family member as well soon anyway. He hoped she was enjoying her time with the Amazons.
"You fly kid?" Kon asked, smiling, trying to project a friendly image at the kid. He was pretty good if Robin was standing next to him, glowering at whomever he was trying to charm. He hoped he was just as good without Robin there to growl and glare.
~~Can you attain flight?~~ Superman repeated in Kryptonian. The child screwed up his face and frowned, jumping, but not flying. Kon scooped him up into his arms, and lifted off.
"C'mon, Bats'll run the tests so we know what the kid is," Kon suggested.
"Let me get his ship as well." Clark nodded. He picked up the ship, and let Kon carry the child. Kon was a better idea to carry the child anyway. With his Tactile Telekinesis if the child startled, Kon would still be able to keep a hold of it.
"At least this answered a question I had." Kon grinned at the kid, mussing it's hair.
"What?" Superman asked curiously.
"Who's gonna be Superboy after me," Kon replied. "When Damie and Lian are Robin and Speedy and Wally's kids are Imp and Kid Flash, and the next Wonder Girl comes around, and Cerdian's Aqualad. Guess this little squirt can have my name, s'long as he's not evil, or square."
"Being square shouldn't be a consideration." Superman glared reprovingly.
"It is though. No boring guy's gonna go around called Superboy, not after all the work I put into it, getting out from beneath your total square rep." Kon smirked. "Face it, Kal, cool is so much more fun. And he'll have a Robin to keep him on the up and up anyway." They descended as the manor came into view.
"You had better have a good explanation for this." Bruce glared, once they got into the cave.
