Jim stared down at the small creature that now depended on him. He’d made it through the funerals okay. Made it all through the paperwork, signing off so many things that he felt like he’d signed his life away. But it hadn’t really hit him until they handed him the creature. The...little girl. What was he supposed to do with a little girl? He barely knew what to do with girls his age and he didn’t think taking her to a bar would work, no matter how much he wanted to go for a drink right now. He wished he hadn’t turned down Bones’ offer to stay with him. Bones would actually know what to do with a little girl. He was great with Joanna when her mother let her visit them.
Just figured, didn’t it? His mom would go and have a kid another kid, and then desert that one too. Only this time, instead of being able to dump it off on a stepdad to be abused, she was dumping it on Jim. Okay, to be fair, she hadn’t probably meant to dump it on Jim. He didn’t think she meant to die in an engineering accident along with the sperm donor. But now Jim was left with a small creature who wasn’t able to fend for itself, and had to be taken care of.
“What are we supposed to do?” Jim collapsed back onto the bed, and stared at her some more. “Katherine Cassandra Kirk?” Hell, she wasn’t even really a Kirk but Mom hadn’t changed her last name through any of the marriages. She had to be happy now, reunited with Dad. He wished Sam was somewhere. He had no clue if his brother was even alive anymore. If Sam was here Sam could take her. Admiral Pike had assured him he could still be Captain even if he had to bring Kate with him on board the ship. They were low on Captains, so allowances were being made. Thank fuck.
“Jim?” Bones nudged the door to Jim’s earth quarters open. “Hey, who’s that? New girlfriend?” He tone was lightly teasing, and Jim could feel his concerned gaze lingering over him.
“Bones, meet Katie Kirk.” Jim scrubbed a hand over his face. “My sister.”
“Well now.” Bones got her out of her carrier. “What’s a cutie like you doing being related to him?” She looked up at him and made nonsense sounds. “Is she coming with us?”
“She has to,” Jim responded. “No more relatives unless you think I’m going to drop her off with some stepfather...”
“Of course not,” Bones said instantly and wrapped an arm around Jim as he nestled Katie between them. Katie seemed to object strongly to this and screwed up her face to yowl. She had some lungs on her, Jim admitted. Bones bounced her. “When was the last time this little lady ate?”
“I don’t know,” Jim admitted. And that was another thing. He barely made sure he ate, how was he supposed to make sure she did? And got her diapers changed, and whatever else you did with a baby? “I need help.”
“You’ve got it,” Bones said, reassuringly. “Let’s see about getting her fed, and changed. I’ll show you how.”
“What would I do without you?” Jim asked.
“Die of disease, or allergic reaction,” Bones answered instantly.
Jim forced out a chuckle as he watched Bones make the formula, and test it, then shove it into her mouth. He stood well back when Bones offered to let him hold her. He’d drop her or something.
“C’mon, Jim, she’s your baby sister. ” Bones rolled his eyes at him. “She’s not a bomb.”
“I’ll drop her on her head. Besides, she likes you,” Jim pointed out. Crap, did babies explode? Besides in their pants. And damn her pants were starting to stink, beneath that pink sundress.
“She’ll like you too, if you feed her,” Bones said. “Now sit down and hold out your arms. You’re going to have to do that sometime or another.” Jim sighed and bowed to inevitability. Just this once. And it was only because it was Bones asking, looking at him with those green eyes. Katie had green eyes too, he noticed. She was...kind of cute.
The rest of the evening was taken up with teaching Jim how to handle a six month old girl. The bright spot was Bones said not only was she in perfect health, but she probably slept through the night too, so once she was in bed, Jim expected she’d stay there until morning. Jim thanked whatever powers there were for small blessings. Being sleep deprived more than he usually was while being a Captain would get him killed, he had no doubt.
“Which means,” Bones said, as he maneuvered Jim to the bed and pressed their foreheads together, feeling the stress of the day causing tension that was squeezing Jim’s shoulders into knots. “That I can take care of you now.”
Jim didn’t answer, just wrapped his arms around Bones and kissed him hungrily. It had been a long, stupid day and Bones was solid, on top of him. Solid and real and still made sense. He clawed at Bones shirt, suddenly needing the skin to skin contact. Bones chuckled and moved back long enough for them to strip, before pressing against Jim again, aligning their bodies, pressing into each other. Jim kissed him hard, grinding against Bones. Bones was his solid. His for sure thing. And after today, he needed it.
Bones played his body, coaxing out moans and groans and whimpers, like he was a maestro with a well loved piano. He knew every spot on Jim to make Jim come. And when Jim finally did come, legs wrapped around Bones shoulders, muffled groaning, Bones kissed his forehead, and didn’t disconnect them for a while. Jim felt more in control by the time he was done and they were laying, Bones on top of him, squishing him and pressing the rest of the world out, until it was just the two of them.
