Did anyone watch Stargate Universe last night?
This is Stargate grown up. More adult. All in all I liked the show and I want to learn more about the characters and learn more about the situation they are in. I think there is more going on here than we know and these two episodes just scratched the surface. Perhaps I'll pick up more clues on my rewatch tonight.
I want to watch Daniel's introduction to the Stargate videos. LOL! "Hi, I'm Daniel Jackson…." The in joke about Dr. Jackson not making a video on ascension also made me laugh. It was a nice way to stay true to the Stargate mythology and at the same time create a new show.
I don't normally like flashbacks, but they gave the premiere a nice framework and I didn't find them distracting. I like that the show didn't need to pander to the audience by slapping on a title card on the bottom of the screen either. I liked the choice to not have big swelling music just before the commercial breaks. I will withhold my judgment on shaky camera.
Below are my first thoughts on the characters.
Rush - Kay, Rush. What are you doing? What's your motivation, buddy? How much is Rush acting by himself and how much is sanctioned? Questions, questions, questions. All in all, damn, Robert Carlyle can act.
Scott - He was another pleasant surprise. I've read lot of complaints that he and Vanessa James shouldn't be having sex well on duty. *headdesk* No, they shouldn't be, but that told you a whole lot about their characters.
Chloe - My father isn't a senator or in political office, but I really identify with her. The character hooked me when she introduced herself to Eli and left out who her father was. When she eventually walked away without a word to Rush when he asked for a chance she had me sold.
Eli - After I get suspend my disbelief of him cracking a code in a video game and have the military show up at his door, I found myself liking him-sweet, goofy, and one of the most "normal" characters. He's gonna be the joker of the show.
TJ - She explains things very well. This isn't a knock. All her dialogue was precise and she didn't mince words. She explained what she needed to and didn't bumble it. She has presence and I envy that. The intercuts when TJ was explaining the situation to Young while Chloe was also explaining to her father demonstrated this nicely.
Young - He's not an O'Neill or Sheppard kind of character. The poor guy spent much of the show unconscious and I'm glad it was Chloe's father who sacrificed himself for the ship rather than the stoic/heroic colonel who give his life for duty. I'm also guessing he's had an affair with TJ.
Wray - She didn't have much to do here, but I am eagerly waiting for more. She knows things.
Telford - LDP had even less to do than Ming-Na. Still glad to see him though.
Greer - He had some nice line reads that left me happy. He seems to have an angry backstory and I liked the scene when he held Rush at gunpoint.
If you didn't catch it last night and still want to, it is up on
hulu. Go watch. =)
