Music and Media Intertwined

There's always been for me a connect between music and media for me. The importance of music supporting a storyline, whether that is found in television, movies, and fan videos. The collaboration of music and story can make or break a story - it can throw me, as an audience member, out of a scene or completely draw me in.

For many years I've been interested in fanvideos being made, but as with television and movies, a story (of one sort or another) is being told, whether it's lyrical or instrumental. A stunning example of that is Bear McCreary's music in Battlestar Galactica; for which the Adama & Roslin theme is so poignant for me in their scenes and the variations of that score. John Williams does the same thing for films. Who can't instantly recall the Superman themes played throughout, or the marches of the Star Wars films? They've become so much a part of the collective consciousness for generations of people.

More and more, television and film has been the outlet for new and/or independent artists, as well as established musicians, to have their music reach a broader audience. There's been many a song used with a television show - either on our screens or via fan videos, to which I may or may not have been otherwise exposed. More than a few times, I've heard a song that I liked on a vid or in a show and I want to get it. These days, it's a search online to find the artist, and their music (iTunes, MySpace, etc).

One of the additional things which drew me to Guiding Light, aside from the Otalia storyline over the past year, has been the incorporation of music to support storylines. I have found a few artists that I particularly enjoy. Naimee Coleman, Kyler England, Gabriel Mann, Adrianne Gonzalas (the latter three make up the band The Rescues as well as having their own albums), Joe Koenig. Many times the lyrics so well match the theme or description of the scenes being played out. A listing of music on GL is available here, and there are links to the artist's websites/music.

Since Kyler and The Rescues have had a lot of their music played on Guiding Light over the past couple years, especially within the past year, many GL fans have been turning up at the artist's gigs around the US, not only in support of GL, but also as fans of the music. April Grant/Destini of the Big Purple Dreams Admin, had the chance to interview both Kyler and Adrianne in special music podcasts.

Particular songs which stick out for me: Naimee Coleman's "Gave It All Away" in the April 14th graveyard admission scene.

And Kyler England's "Quittin' Time" towards the end of this clip (about the 5 minute mark). This song, whether I hear it in the clip or on my iTunes/iPod playlist, almost always tears me up. (July 9, 2009).
