Just so you know, I had to re-watch "Severed Dreams" for this entry. The sacrifices I make for you people. Spoilers!
There are many, many to choose from, but in the end, I have to go with "Severed Dreams." There was so much about that episode, on both the macro and micro level. On the macro level of course was the thing I keep saying: that thing you keep thinking will never happen, because it's too HUGE, and TV doesn't work like that? HAPPENED.
And then there's the micro level.
1. So many characters had great moments. Londo and the Narn; Ivanova in her starfury, Corwin's silent shock and Ivanova asking if he was okay; Garibaldi's, "Ah, NUTS."
2. Delenn, OTOH, ruled this episode. From "I will tear this ship apart with my bear hands until I find them," and "we move now, together, or not at all."
3. And her crowning moment of awesome that I simply must quote in full:
"Do not force us to engage."
"Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived battle with a Minbari Fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives … be somewhere else!"
I jumped up and cheered. It was a moment marred only by my asshole roommates telling me to calm down, it was just a TV show. This from people who were planning to make a living studying modernist poetry. And yes, I owe a fraction of my radical canon-busting awareness to that moment.
4. And yet, that moment was made possible by Sheridan's quiet, defeated, "How many?" when told that jump gates were opening.
5. And in the small details: when Sheridan gave people permission to leave the bridge before they had to essentially commit treason, someone did. That, in the end, was a big part of what set this show apart. There's a lot to be said for uplifting solidarity, but there's something else to be said for acknowledging that the choice you're making is hard, that no everyone is on your side (and for good reasons), and that as we eventually saw, these choices have long-term consequences.
I think I might need to watch it again.
