For anyone who's seen
this story (about the Lakota Indians withdrawing from their treaties with the U.S. and becoming a totally sovereign nation) and is wondering how it will affect the
Pretty Bird Woman House, comments at
this post from DailyKos suggest that the move isn't necessarily legal, and that the media is misrepresenting the issue. So I don't think that the shelter is in danger of losing its grants and such, at least not yet.
I'm guessing that this is a way to bring already low international opinion against the U.S. (in the wake of the U.N.'s resolution on the rights of indigenous peoples and the Iraq war) to bear on Native issues; we'll see how well it works.
