don't close your eyes

- I'm not surprised that LJ finally caved to the extremely sketchy and vague laws about child pornography and the definition of obscenity. Trolls have been waving those around for YEARS -- fandom-scruples is the only one whose name I can remember now, but I know there have been others -- and honestly, all I can think is what took them so long?

- I'm going to voice an unpopular fandom opinion: I think that much of this uproar is because of our irresponsibility in regards to adult material. Anyone, regardless of age, can access the stuff we're writing and drawing, and they probably won't have the context or experience needed to frame it properly, and if we don't like the consequences of that then we'd damn well better do something about it. Yes, some of the journals that were suspended/deleted were f-locked. A few people are suffering for the mistake of many. We've done nothing to appear or even be responsible about this, and now we're bitching because LJ is doing it for us?

- Personally, I don't think leaving for a new journal system will accomplish much. The reason this is coming up now is because of the current political climate and the growing popularity of social networking. I can see two outcomes to migration: 1.) the journal system will collapse under the strain, or 2.) it will expand in order to meet user demand, taking on corporate sponsors and additional media scrutiny, and eventually we'll be fighting this battle again, just a few years later. Also, I'm lazy. I've had this journal for five years and I don't want to lose it. I like my friendslist and don't want to spend my time checking five different websites -- even if I had a broadband connection, I still wouldn't want to do it.

- I'm f-locking or deleting my old fics at in_my_notebook till I figure out how to manage it. I still have my GreatestJournal, but I haven't even poked it with a stick for a few months, so whatever. If you're moving and you really want me to keep up with you, comment here and I'll try to keep an eye out.
