It’s only his expectations, really, that are thwarted.

Lord Asriel expects the aurora to burn, fierce and cold in the sky; he expects the snow to whip into his eyes, the wind to rise against him. He expects to see the city in the lights.

But then -

But then, something happens that he doesn’t expect.

He sees the speck, falling from the sky, only seconds before it hits. Shades his eyes, against the light, and watches, carefully, as the speck resolves into a dot, the dot into a shape, the shape - into a person.

The person falls, strangely softly, into the show, half-obscured by the windstorm. Asriel pauses, for a moment; whoever it is doesn’t make a move, doesn’t stand.

Unhurried, Asriel moves to the sledge, pulls a bag open, and fishes inside.

The stranger is still as Asriel approaches him - yes, it is a him. Wearing some sort of uniform, hands are bare, no overcoat.

No -

No daemon.

Asriel pauses for a moment, in reflexive revulsion, but he calms himself, pushes it out of his mind.

Asriel scans the sky, but there’s too much snow, now, and the aurora is gone.

Can’t be helped.

Asriel lifts the stranger, easily, and sets him down on the furs, on the sledge. If he’s going to survive, they have to get inside - quickly.

“What are you?” asks Felix. “You’re doing this work - and it’s important, it’s critical, and you’re just alone here, out in the ice. For all I know, you and - and him - could be the only people in this entire world.” He pauses, to take a breath, then - “So, what are you?”

“A hunter,” says Asriel, shortly.

“And what exactly are you hunting?”

Asriel meets Felix’s eyes, and lets the question answer itself.

Felix looks away first.

It doesn’t take Asriel long to get Felix in his bed.

He flushes, when Asriel corners him - invisible, under the color of his skin, but Asriel can feel the heat through his fingertips. Felix inhales, and Asriel catches him then, off-guard, relentless, until Felix’s lips soften beneath his, until he feels the touch of Felix’s tongue.

“Don’t,” Felix protests, quiet, and Asriel coaxes him into another kiss, another. Felix is breathless, then, and his eyes are closed - still, but he’s struggling, inside.

Struggling to no avail - Asriel has him, under the freshly warmed furs on his bed. Felix seems hesitant, torn, and still shocked, somehow, that someone like Asriel would choose someone like him. And Asriel uses every ounce of that power in binding Felix to him.

Felix twists under him, in the rush of his pleasure, and Asriel soothes him through the aftermath - this is the real art. Not the foreplay (though he savors that, too - the tension, the flirting, the catch) but the few moments when Asriel can make sure - make sure - that the one he’s seduced is his.

He knows he’s won, by the time Felix falls asleep.

“I’m beginning a war,” he tells Felix, his hand outstretched. “Will you fight with me?”

The aurora shifts endlessly, in the sky; Felix reaches up, and takes Asriel’s hand. “I will,” he answers.
