Ficlet: Pumpkin Carving

Oct 22, 2007 23:49

When Sylar was younger, Halloween was his favorite holiday.

Christmas inevitably disappointed; whether the presents were good or not, the anticipation was always too much for the actual event. His birthdays were packed full of false cheer, fake smiles, a façade of familial love that he found unsettling. Thanksgiving was never the time of family ( Read more... )

That was amazing! The way Sylar juxtaposes his childhood Halloweens and what he is doing with Peter is superb. Also I really liked that he calls her Virginia not his mother but Virginia very nice touch. The way he almost wants to be beaten is very well put and makes you wonder. Very good fic all in all. :)

I know the prompt I gave you wasn’t very good so when you came out with this I was amazed. Again thank you so much for writing this. I feel honored .

Also side note: Yay Halloween. Yay love/hate Sylar/Peter relationships.

I enjoy challenging and unorthodox prompts. Though, honestly, this was the first thing I thought of. The kind of threatening connotation of taking a pumpkin and changing it into something you want it to be, rotting it out in the process. When I was little, I liked the glowy pumpkins, but it always made me kind of obscurely upset that they rotted and had to be thrown away or put on the compost heap.

Anyhow. I'm really glad you liked it! :)

Ooh. I can totally buy that Halloween is Gabrial/Sylar's favorite holiday, and I love all the anecdotes about carving pumpkins: the memory of his mother, the blank slate metaphor, the neighbors with their elaborate scenes.

Of course, I love Halloween too, which only makes me love Sylar all the more.

And I was really intrigued by this: Please, thinks Sylar, and he hopes, beyond hope, that Peter will beat him.

That idea that deep down Sylar wants to be stopped, and yet can't seem to stop himself. Shivery.

Halloween is totally my favorite holiday. I was definitely projecting that on Sylar when I wrote that part :P

I like doing that - making a character's actions definitely evil, but have that sliver of hesitation and wish that makes him human.

Thank you! :)

We totally used to have black cats and silhouettes and complicated jack o'lantern. And we ate baked pumpkin seeds for weeks afterward.

*misses home*

Would shower you with complements, but demonqueen666 said everything I wanted to.

OMG so awesome.

Oh Peter. You're just so earnest:) We don't celebrate Halloween here but I can totally see why it would have been Gabriel's thing. With a mum like his, every other special occassion would have been too pressure filled.

He is :P And seriously. Every other occasion is too pressure-filled - and Gabriel, as a definitely-more-introvert than me, would probably find it insanely so.

Thank you :)
