NYS Cigarette Tax Hike

Jun 04, 2008 01:41

All today I've heard a lot of people bitching about the hike on taxes on cigarettes in NYS.

And all day, it's been pissing me the fuck off. I mean, I kept my mouth shut all day whenever someone mentioned it. I didn't go off on a rant, despite how much I wanted to, because I didn't want to deal with the drama, and I didn't want to argue at a wall.

But seriously. People are surprised? There's not one good thing in a cigarette. There's not one good thing a cigarette can do to you. Even the relieving of stress is only caused by the satisfaction of stopping a craving during a point of high stress, giving the illusion of calming you down. (I'm a theater major - trust me, I know.)

And people are surprised they're hiking the price up to over $8 average in NYS? Seriously? Honestly, people are well informed now to the effects of smoking - income included. And when I was young? I was totally informed by teachers and media. And And I've heard nothing but bitching about this all damn day from people the same age as me - or younger. In all honesty, you were warned that your wallets would take an impact, and you chose to become addicted regardless.

This isn't New York's fault, guys - come on. Whether they simply want to profit off of a bad decision when the economy is shit right now - and who can blame them? The economy is fucked up at the moment. - or whether they genuinely think the price hike will keep people from smoking, who cares? In the VERY least, it will keep a few more people from starting, intentional or not. If people want to live shorter lives, do it on their own time, with their own air. I'd rather mine be smoke-free because of the high cost of a pack of cigarettes. Not to try and turn this into a 'smoking is bad for you, everyone should quit!' speech, as much as a good thing I think that'd be. (Both to stop more habits, and to kick the money from tobacco companies and their scheming ways.) My Dad's been smoking for almost 40 years, at a pack a day (more than that, for a good 20 years or so), so I understand how hard it is to quit. He's tried over ten methods probably more than twenty times. It's fucking hard. So why start? It's a waste of money - even more money thanks to the tax hike - which I fully support, if you couldn't already tell.

But seriously, I wish people would simply stop their bitching. Yeah, it sucks, but you got yourselves into this. You don't see people throwing themselves down the stairs on purpose, then complaining to have broken an arm. Same thing.
