My lack of functional camera is growing frustrating. I'm torn, though--should I wait and save up for the camera I really want (a Canon G10 or G12, which I think hits a nice sweet spot of having lots of manual controls and good image quality while still being portable enough that I'll have it with me when I want a camera) or should I buy a sub-$100 compact to tide me over until I get something better? I guess in asking the question, I've sort of answered it--having a poor-quality camera is far better than having no camera, and its limitations might even help me work on my photography skills.
Or...hmm. It would appear I can get a nice used film SLR for dirt cheap (more or less for the cost of the lens on it.) Taking film costs and processing into account, it's not a very good value, but for an initial outlay of about $170 I could get both a cheap low-quality digital for having with me all the time, and a film camera for scratching the Art Photography itch when it arises. In some ways that would be better than something like the Canon G12 which is trying to compromise between the two extremes. ::ponders::
