CHARACTER NAME: Seto Kaiba
FANDOM: YuGiOh
CHRONOLOGY: Anime
BACKGROUND:
Seto Kaiba’s story began in Ancient Egypt where he was a priest and unknown cousin to the pharaoh Atem. With the other priests he used his millennium item, the Rod, to seal the evil ka from a person’s body and seal it in a monster tablet. These tablets became the basis for the game Duel Monsters in the future. When the palace was attacked by the thief king Bakura, Seto sought among the commoners those with strong enough Ka to defeat him. He was willing to torture any of them in order to make the power even stronger before drawing it out. Until he came across Kisara; a beautiful woman with blue eyes whose Ka took the shape of a White Dragon. He quickly fell in love with her light and refused to kill her to take possession of the dragon. After saving her multiple times she swore to protect him with her very soul, and so Priest Seto and his reincarnation Seto Kaiba were bound to the Blue Eyes White Dragon.
Reborn as Seto Kaiba, he remembered none of this and was raised to be so practical that he fiercely denied any of it even when shown visions of himself battling the pharaoh. His mother died when he was five and his father three years later, leaving him in charge of his brother Mokuba at the orphanage they were left at. He was a child genius, without many outlets during this time except for games of chess. It was not a happy time, and he had to spend most of his energy on protecting Mokuba from bullies. Everything changed when Gozoboro Kaiba came to the orphanage to find an heir to his company. He was impressed with Seto, but did not want to take both of the children. Refusing to leave his brother behind, Seto challenged Gozoboro to a game of chess with the stakes of, if he won then Gozoboro would have to adopt them both. Though skilled at the game, Seto cheated to ensure that he and Mokuba would get a home. This upbringing has always left a soft spot in Kaiba’s heart for children, especially unfortunates.
From that point on Seto was trained to be a CEO. He was put through grueling tutoring after his normal school. He developed many talents during this time including flying a plane, flying helicopters and resourceful fighting abilities (he can even stop a gun with a playing card by understanding its mechanics and where to block the hammer). What Gozoboro did not realize was that he wasn’t raising an heir, he was raising a rival, who at the age of 16 managed to gain 51 shares of Kaiba Corp and was able to take control as CEO of the company. It is rumored that Seto killed Gozoboro to claim this seat, a speculation that Kaiba neither confirms nor denies. In truth Gozoboro took this time to impart his last lesson into Seto; “to lose means to die” and jumped out the skyscraper window.
Seto ran Kaiba Corp while still attending high school but changed its platform from weapons to gaming and theme parks. He had promised Mokuba when they were younger than one day he would build him a theme park, and with his rank as #1 gaming champion in Japan his company had all of the press it could need and he was soon able to fulfill this promise with Kaiba Land. Kaiba was incredibly skilled not only in business but also electronics and mechanics. After experiencing a shadow game against Yami Yugi in which his duel monster cards came to life he was able within a few short weeks to replicate it with holograms, and later improved that system to be portable.
Highly skeptical, Kaiba was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of magic by Yugi and his friends through Duel Monsters. He had already achieved the #1 duelist ranking in Japan, in part because of his ownership of 3 of the 4 Blue Eyes White Dragon (BEWD) cards. After searching for the last one, he unexpectedly found it in possession of Yugi’s grandfather. He offered to buy it from him, but what turned down. In revenge he kidnapped his grandfather and stole the rare card from him after defeating him in a card game. Since the rules of Duel Monsters state that you can only have three copies of the same card in your deck, he tore the remaining BEWD so it could never be used against him. Seeing this, Yami Yugi challenged him to a duel, and when Kaiba lost he suffered a “mind crush” to destroy the evil in him.
After this duel Kaiba went on sabbatical from his company, mostly to avoid everyone after his humiliating defeat but also to perfect his duel disk system. While he was the gone the largest shareholders of Kaiba Corp (the big 5) plotted to steal it from him. The They made a deal with Pegasus that if he could defeat Yugi (who was the new #1) he could have Kaiba Corp. Mokuba heard these plans and tried to sabotage them, but ended up instead being kidnapped while Kaiba was gone. They attempted to assassinate Kaiba, but he escaped and flew to Pegasus’s island to save his brother and company. However, Pegasus held the upper hand as he had taken Mokuba’s soul hostage, and so forced Kaiba to duel Yugi to get him back. Kaiba proved that despite the removal of his evil side he still had a “loss equals death” mentality. When it became evident he was going to lose and therefore fail Mokuba, he stood on top of a rampart and threatened to jump if he lost. Even though Yugi forfeited the duel Kaiba was unable to save Mokuba from Pegasus and met the same fate until Yugi saved him. Even after having lost his soul like that and being trapped in a card, he still refused to believe that magic existed.
Reunited with his brother he returned to his company, fully prepared to leave all this mystical crap behind him, until he was dragged in again by Ishizu. With the promise of the God Cards, the strongest cards in all of Duel Monsters, and the initial payment of Obelisk the Tormentor he agreed to host the Battle City tournament with his new duel disk technology. During this tournament he became closer to Yugi and his friends though he would not count himself among them. Before the tournament could be completed however Kaiba and Yugi with his scoobies were kidnapped in a virtual world created by Kaiba’s adoptive brother Noa. Gozoboro had apparently hidden the fact that he had a sickly son from Seto even as he was training him to be a CEO (yay anime plot holes). In the virtual world not only did Kaiba need to contend with this brother who was attempting to take over his body so he could rule Kaiba Corp, but also met once again with Gozoboro. The experience forced Kaiba to deal with his childhood from orphanage to Gozoboro’s death and, after defeating his father in a duel, put it behind him.
After being freed from the virtual world, the Battle City finals recommenced. The finals were the first time since ancient Egypt that Kaiba had been near the Millennium Rod. It rebelled against its new master and showed Seto flashes of his past life as a priest for the nameless pharaoh (aka Yami Yugi) as well as explaining further his connection to the BEWD. In the end Yami Yugi defeated Seto again and claimed Obelisk the Tormentor. He was infuriated by this, but unlike before accepted the defeat with the promise that he would defeat him later.
When the God Cards were stolen from Yugi, Kaiba again had to unwillingly join their group to save the world from magical forces he completely doesn’t believe in. During this he met his self-proclaimed arch rival, Alastair, who wouldn’t leave him alone and blamed him for all of his woes. Kaiba nearly lost his soul twice in duels with Alastair but won in the end. His tragic past made Kaiba take pity on him, as he saw the poor child inside and saved him. He even footed the bill for Alastair’s medical care, but after Alastair ran away, Kaiba forgot about him as he couldn’t care less. Though he had to fight with mystical dragons against obviously mystical forces and lost his soul AGAIN, he still maintained his fierce denial that there was anything magical about the world.
Kaiba had hoped after all this, to be finally left alone, but was dragged back in this time by Yami Bakura who had kidnapped Mokuba. After a duel to get him back, Kaiba was given the Millenium Eye for his own mysterious reasons. Tempted by the presence of the eye and the secrets it had he finally flew to Egypt where he was dragged into the pharaoh’s memory world of ancient Egypt. Unlike the brief flashes from before he was treated to a complete retelling of his past self, and was unable to deny it. He met up with Yugi and his friends within the memory and helped them defeat Yami Bakura and Zorc. Even though he still denied it on principle he had to finally, grudgingly, admit that some mystical forces existed. It was hard not to when he saw Yugi and Yami duel against each other and had to admit there had been two of them this whole time. Though he had wanted to be the one to duel Atem for the ceremonial battle, he stepped aside for Yugi. Since Yugi won, as far as Kaiba is concerned as long as he can defeat him it will be the same as defeating the pharaoh would have been.
PERSONALITY:
To be blunt, Kaiba is a bit of an asshole. He doesn’t want to make friends; allies are okay, but friends are unnecessary. In order to be an ally one has to earn his respect, which can be incredibly difficult to do. One needs to not only show that they’re worth something, but also have an air that they don’t even need his respect. In his world there are those very few who he respects, a larger portion of everyone else who he is indifferent to, and scum who have proven again and again that they are worth nothing to him. He’s changed a lot since first meeting Yugi, but in many regards he still believes that it’s not how you play the game, it’s whether you win or lose. He cheats far less now than he used to, and would never dream of doing so in a card game. If however, in the world of business he can get ahead by cheating a rival, then so much the better.
Kaiba is a genius and is practical to the point of outright denial as he firmly believes that science is better than mysticism (which doesn’t exist anyway). At 16 he was creating high tech portable dueling systems that were used the world over all to enhance the joy of a card game. He is ambitious and competitive. If someone has something he wants, he will get it one way or another. He may not longer believe that losing equals death, but losing is still something to be avoided at all costs. He is also incredibly obsessive. He hunts down rivals for years until he has beaten them fully. He traced the BEWD across the world because he wanted them as a symbol. He made a personal jet to look like a BEWD. Anything he can get his hands on in the business world eventually ends up with some form of tie to the BEWD. In some ways he is lucky that he was able to maintain his lost childhood through a gaming business while still staying the adult he had been since his parents died.
Even harder to earn than his respect is his loyalty, but once someone has it, it is unfaltering. At the moment only Mokuba and the BEWD have the honor of his loyalty. He’ll kill himself to protect his brother. Anything his brother wants, within reason, he will find a way to get for him just to make him happy and keep him safe. Even though the BEWD is just a card, when he allows it, Kaiba feels a connection to them from the past. He always has to think twice before sacrificing them in a duel; even the monster he got because of it would be even stronger. If his opponent during a duel uses a card to take control of his BEWD, it is viewed as wrenching his card’s loyalty from him and Kaiba is ready to destroy his opponent in order to get his dragon back.
Even though to adults he acts like a complete ass, he has a soft spot for children; especially those who are unfortunate like he was. He’s always nice to them at his amusement parks, and even makes sure that they are affordable to everyone who wants to go. It’s easy for most people to perceive this as a front, which he allows them to, but he really wants poor children to have fun. One of the reasons he is so nice to children is he wants them to have a chance. Everything he puts his mind to is accomplished. A silly, childish dream about his own amusement park, done. Jet shaped like a BEWD, done. He firmly believes that anyone who has a chance can do the same thing. He started with nothing and succeeded beyond most people’s wildest dreams, and thinks that if other people can’t do the same it is just because they’re lazy. This is why he wants to help poor children, so they can have a chance. If they screw it up, that’s their fault, but at least they had a chance. A chance in his mind doesn’t mean helping them in any direction necessarily. It can be as simple as stopping a bully from beating them up once and then leaving them alone to deal with it next time.
CLASS: He doesn’t want to be classified as he thinks both extremes are for comic books and morons. I say he’s an anti-hero. He’ll keep the dogtags, but the likelihood of him wearing them are slim to none.
SUPERHERO NAME: Again he thinks these are for comic books and morons. He’s Seto fucking Kaiba, he won’t use a superhero name.
ALTER EGO: Seto Kaiba. He will become the CEO of Kaiba Corp, once he gets it up and running in this new world.
POWER: > Non-canon: Mimic. Canonically, he learned how to ride a motorcycle, pilot a plane/helicopter, run a company, multiple languages to run said company, kendo moves, all while designing theme parks and becoming the number one gamer in all of Japan all before he was 16. In a super power this incredible speed of learning would translate into a form of mimicry, where once he sees someone do something he can do it as well. This will be limited by his other super power of severe denial. He won’t be able to use any kind of mystical ability because he doesn’t believe it exists. Also, the longer it’s been since he’s seen/used the ability the weaker it will become.

What is this? I demand whoever was controlling that robot to respond. If this is someone’s idea of a sick joke it stopped being funny before you even thought of it. Whoever thought this clunky piece of junk would be a great way to communicate, you’re an idiot. My cell phone would work a lot better, if it was getting a signal. Damn, the Kaiba Corp satellites must be down. If anyone wants those satellites up and running again they better speak up and explain all of this. No one at Kaiba Corp will be able to fix it without me.
Is anyone even able to hear any of this? You better not have been running these pieces of junk off of my satellites without permission. If you don’t respond soon I’ll have to assume that you are. That won’t end well for you. If my lawyers don’t take care of you completely, I will. I have to say, the android at the beginning was a nice touch…if I couldn’t have built something better in my sleep that is. Can she do any other tricks than dispensing dog-tags like a capsule machine, or could you not figure out how to write more than one line of code?
::turns his face to the side and growls::
This is ridiculous! You had better speak up and tell me where I am and where the nearest Kaiba Corp tower is. Right now!
THIRD PERSON:
Kaiba held the chain he’d just received between two fingers, as though touching it with anything else might infect him with whatever was wrong with this place. A nearby streetlight flickered on obscuring the words on the dog tags dangling from the chain, not that Kaiba cared what they said. He was examining them only because they were one of two clues he’d been given to where he was. It didn’t look like they were going to be doing anything soon. With a grunt he tossed the chain in the air, grabbed the tags when they were at hand height and stuffed them in his pocket.
He had already tried his cell phone, ready to use the GPS system to find out where he was and have Roland get a plane to fly him back. Once he was back at Kaiba Corp he would figure out who had brought him here and make sure they paid for it. However, that plan ended the moment he’d pulled out the phone from his brief case. It didn’t have any signal at all, not even enough to tell him the time. His phone was hooked up to the Kaiba Corp satellites, which should have been world wide. Since it wasn’t working that meant one of them had to be down. Kaiba had growled at the thought of something else to make his day worse, but couldn’t do anything about it until he was back and so let the matter drop.
With his cell phone a dead end and the dog tags revealing no answers to the mystery of how he had shown up here he turned to his other clue: the clunky piece of electronics. It was easy to tell what it was for, but he still didn’t know if he wanted to use it yet. To do so would mean he hadn’t been able to figure it out for himself; that he was playing by whoever had brought him here’s rules. All he knew is that whoever it was controlled the robot that had originally greeted him. He had to smirk as he thought of it and looked at the comm in his hand; he could make better electronics in his sleep than whoever had put these together.
Feeling more superior than he had since first waking up, he was ready to face the unknown mastermind. After all, he was a mastermind too, and if the electronics were this bad it would take no time at all for him to figure out a way out of here. All he had to do was find a Kaiba Corp tower and it would be simple. His smirk widened at the thought and he fingered the on button on his comm. He would play by this unknown person’s games, for now. At least until he found away around them, which he knew he would. He would teach him to play a game with Seto Kaiba.
Query: Is Kaiba allowed to come with laptop containing his duel monster database? At the moment it is my understanding that only the cards that were brought with the duelists exist in this world. Having the laptop would allow him to expand the card game beyond the cards that are in the possession of the current duelist, so they can be purchased by anyone who wants a chance to play. (Iron Man versus
Kaibaman common!) It would allow him to start his own business more quickly and expand the holographic potential of The City.
