so as im about to cross eastern parkway, waiting for the light to change, a blue chevie something or other pulls up to the light. the bottom is all rusted out and an acid cloud of aqua smoke chokes out of the exhausts. in it sits a shirtless man, mullet lofting in the wind, aviators, little pencil-thin rat moustache. from the rear view i notice a cross hanging along with to little boxing gloves. he turns north onto bardstown road, the large CB antennae on the roof of the car wobbling back and forth and the rusted, decrepid engine tries its best to comply with the driver's demands. not 15 seconds later, as im walking a large black SUV, shining like a diamond with rap music blaring roars past, the four black kids in side all wearing fitted hats low. that little 20 seconds of people watching made me think just how much i love this city sometimes.
this morning i spoke to my grandmother for the first time in a while. she speaks in third person and uses phrases that havent been commonly used in 30 years. she asks about my girlfriend and talks about how much she likes her. she tells me she's proud of me and that i've had "a tough roll." when she says my name, its not "nicholas" but "neeck-lus." good stuff.
