30 Prompts - Clean

She was still there when he woke up.

He had fallen asleep easily in Jen's bed the previous evening and slept soundly through the night. His dreams though vivid were little other than a reflection of anxiety buried in his subconscious. Disconnected images of people he knew swam through a sea of black to meet nonsensical objects objects like walls made of fire and trees with running water for branches. Whether from drugs or drama his dreams had often been like this since he stopped having nightmares about the shooting. Breaking out of these violent and confusing depictions and coming into consciousness could be messy. Ordinarily he'd take a few minutes to adjust to the streaks of sunlight coming through the venetian blinds on the window, force himself out of bed and head for the shower. Starting the day would be the best thing to do, clearing his mind and focusing only on what was real.

He squinted over her sleep-mussed hair at the blinking numbers on the digital clock. It was early. He stroked her hair softly and snuggled into her. Her back rested against his chest, securely enveloped in his arms. He pressed a kiss to her temple and closed his eyes. She was still there when he woke up. That meant everything. He didn't have to do anything to find and focus on what was real. She was real and she was in his arms.
