This bloody road remains a mystery
This sudden darkness fills the air
What are we waiting for?
Won't anybody help us?
What are we waiting for?
We can't afford to be innocent
Stand up and face the enemy
It's a do or die situation
We will be invincible
This shattered dream you cannot justify
We're gonna scream until we're satisified
What are we running for?
We've got the right to be angry
What are we running for?
When there's no where we can run to anymore
"Invincible" - Pat Benatar
Gunrunner stalked off from the Moonlight and his brother’s company. He was furious and out of control. He wanted to be with Valerie but he couldn’t stand the crying. It tore at his hearts, drove him to the very edge of his sanity. He still wasn’t sure what Cassius was doing there and in truth he didn’t really want to know. Afraid perhaps that he had been attempting to force himself upon her, after all her dress had been torn. He snarled as he strode down the hall causing fearful glances from those around him. If it were true that Cassius had been there for that purpose, Gunrunner knew he would fly into a rage no one could control. He had learned since meeting Valerie that he was a very jealous and possessive lover, she didn’t mind but he was learning just how dangerous that methodology was.
He walked into his quarter and heard the crying. He sighed at the waves of sadness and fury that they caused in him and he wanted nothing more then to hold her tight, to comfort her. Na’Loth saw him walk into the bedroom and smiled as she left. She didn’t like him much but she respected the closeness that he felt for Valerie and the lengths he was willing to go to for her protection. He looked at Valerie and tried to smile through his anger as he sat next to her brushing the tears from her eyes.
He was a ruthless killer but unbeknownst to others he did have a soft side somewhere down deep beyond the reach or sight of everyone including Alexia. She clung to him and trembled. He wasn’t sure what to do, he had never really felt the desire to comfort anyone before this moment and it left him uncertain. He smiled remembering the one thing he knew she did to comfort herself and he grinned, more out of pleasure that he had thought of something to do for her then the idea itself.
Placing a kiss on her forehead he turned her face to his and raised a brow, “How about we get a hot bath and some tea for you?” She had cried too much and as she tried to answer it came out too scratchy to understand but he saw the relief and grateful expression in her eyes. Smiling he rose to his feet to start the bath and make some tea. He wanted to do more for her but he still didn’t know what more he could do to help.
He sighed again shaking his head as he waited for the water to boil. Gunrunner was still uncomfortable with his feelings for Valerie. They worried him and for the first time in his life he had begun to feel fear. The fear of loss and the fear of others were feelings he didn’t much like. He poured the water in the pot and took it to the bath. He could feel that she was beginning to relax and she smiled as he set the pot on the edge of the bath and kissed her.
He turned back to the bedroom and caught sight of his bloody shirt in the mirror. “Great Maker, no wonder everyone had fled from my path in the hall.”, he mumbled to himself. He grinned and laughed. He liked the idea that others were fearful of him; it gave him an edge in most situations. He pulled off his shirt and tossed it to the side heading to the closet.
He opened the door and noticed a single glittering thing fall from inside. It caught his eye and he bent down curiously picking it from the carpet. It was a single golden thread and as he pulled it through his fingers it cut in. He scowled angrily at it. “Its metal.”
He glanced back to the bath as he stood. “But Valerie can’t wear fabric with metal threads. Where are you from?” he thought looking at the single thread apprehensively. His mind raced attempting to deduce who it could belong to. Alexia had yet to be to his quarters so where else… his mind stalled. “Tatyana!” he growled angrily and narrowed his eye at the thread. Setting it on the nightstand he sat on the bed staring at it.
“But why?” he couldn’t immediately understand why she had been in the closet. He looked around for a suitcase. “Perhaps she had been here to put her things away and had gone into the wrong closet.” He mused before he thought back to his original fears. He still wasn’t sure why she had never introduced herself to him.
His eye widened and then narrowed in ferocity “Was she prying into my privacy?” the question hit him like a rock. He went back to the closet and looked at it. He noticed that some of the things were crooked on their hangers. “That should not be.” He mused internally. Valerie was meticulously clean and she kept everything obsessively in order. He gazed at his feet concentrating, trying to hold back the fear and anger as he wondered how much she had found.
“Gods be damned” he murmured running his hands through his hair. He looked back at the bath afraid. There was one thing he had kept from Valerie, only one and that was if he was caught he would be sent to Centauri Prime and terminated for his “dangerous telepathic” abilities. He had escaped once after his disgrace, it was unlikely he would be able to do it again. He sighed and sat nervously on the bed.
He began trembling uncontrollably in fury and fear. He couldn’t concentrate as he worried for Valerie and his own safety. “What to do?” He wanted to kill her for invading his privacy but then there was Alexia. His twin was fond of this woman already and despite his denial he was prone to the worst temper-tantrums when he was denied his way. Alexia had always gotten his way from the time he was a child and as an adult he was still the same only far more deadly. “Well killing her is out of the question, then what?”
A smile spread on his face as he thought of a previous trick he had done with the help of Kitty. Without further thought he went to the computer and asked Kitty to stop by as soon as possible to help with his plan. The fear melted away as his more devious side took over. He tossed on a button down shirt and regretfully informed Valerie that she would have to go back to the Moonlight alone as he had business to attend to.
He looked at the Narn sitting in the living room. There was nothing to fear Na’Loth could take care of Valerie perhaps better then he could. She had one weapon he didn’t; she always remembered to bite. He grinned and stretched waiting impatiently for Kitty to arrive.
Valerie put her arms around him and he jumped from the unexpected touch. She was calm and relaxed again as she began to think pensively of the nature of his business. “No, the business isn’t dangerous. I just need to go talk with someone about a possible future job.” Valerie smiled, “Then I will see you when you are done?” His nod broadened her grin. They had been busy all day and they had little time to spend together. He was eager to spend time with her but there were more pressing matters at the moment.
He watched her dress partially in admiration of her beauty and partially in aggravation both with Cassius and Tatyana. They were both fools. Valerie looked at him, her eyes full of concern. He smiled wryly and grumbled “I am going to kill him.”
She giggled and kissed him lightly, “Now why would you go and do that? I would miss out on all of the fun then.” She laughed and he tried to laugh with her but he couldn’t. There was a rising fear that Tatyana will betray her, betray all of them. She noticed his distraction and kissed him on the cheek before leaving with the Narn who has begun chattering about how she took a few shots at Cassius as well. That thought made Gunrunner laugh.
A few minutes later the door bell announced the arrival of the beginning of his plan. Kitty entered and she was obviously worried. “Is everything OK?”
He nodded laughing. “Oh, Fine I just need some help covering my tattoo and my ...well you know.. again.” He smiled as she started to laugh. She had helped him hide his race and tattoo in the past and it had gotten him past a doctor, surely then her skills would fool a slave.
She smiled widely. “More business? You know if Valerie ever walked in while I was doing this we’d both get an ear full before we could explain.” She was grinning as she went to the bathroom to retrieve the remaining things she would need.
He unbuttoned his shirt and sat in the chair waiting for her return. He never felt uncomfortable in her presence, mostly due to her nonchalant style and his knowledge that there was little this woman had not seen or done.
She laughs reentering the living room “Who are you hiding from now?”
He laughed in return not wanting to say much. “A woman.”
“Well, don’t worry. Valerie will get them if you don’t fool them. She can be the devil at times.” She winks at him as she starts applying the makeup. “As I am sure you know.” Slightly more serious she continues. “You know Alexia is drinking himself into a stupor in the Moonlight with that new Centauri woman?”
Her words unnerved him further as he again wondered if Tatyana wasn’t actually working for her master instead of against him but Gunrunner does well to hide it and smirks. “You know Alexia and beautiful woman.”
Kitty laughs, “More then you could guess.”
Gunrunner knew exactly what she meant by the comment and he again laughed.
It didn’t take long for Kitty to apply the makeup and the prostethics that would hide his Centauri nature. It was always weird at first to look down and not see the tattoo. It had been there for over twenty years and there was always a momentary feeling that he was looking at someone else’s stomach. And even worse was to not seeing his brachiarte.
“Just remember not to spill alcohol on it.” She laughed, “You owe me.” The make up she used was a miraculous thing. You could swim with it and it wouldn’t come off. Only alcohol removed it. So drinking was out of the question. Besides it subdued his anger and that was the last thing he wanted now.
“What now?” he asked with joking suspicion.
“I’ll think of something.” She was grinning playfully. She never asked for much and he wasn’t worried about owing her a favor.
“I am sure you will.” He gave her a hug before she left. “Thank you, again.”
After she left he allowed his anger free reign. No one else was expected before Tatyana was to arrive and he smirked devilishly. He wanted to be at the height of his rage when she walked in the door. Gunrunner walked into the bedroom and picked up the single thread “Busted.” He thought as he took it out and placed it on the counter.
He left his shirt unbuttoned and grinned. He could then bare his chest and stomach without worry now. “So you think I am a Centauri. Not for long.” He mused and released himself to the ebbing tides of his anger waiting for the traitor’s arrival.
He had raged for almost a half hour and was barely conscious enough to detect her approach. He was seething like a caged, starving predator. He picked up the thread and leaned casually in the bedroom doorway facing the entrance and opened his shirt waiting, enraged and ready to kill. He pushed his anger behind a mask of calm while staring at the door, waiting for the woman to walk in.
