So this week, Comcast sent me their new cable modem model. It's this giant thing; I recognize it as being similar to the one mom was sold. "You need this for our new faster internet

A friend of mine in a similar situation connected their own router after the provided modem to provide network security. Firewall between router and modem.

A metal box placed over top should take care of the unwanted wireless signal.

I spent two hours on their chat feature having them turn off the features I didn't want active, before plugging it into my network.

I had to ask for 'bridge mode' and to deactivate wireless. It was a pain, but it's done now.

I'm still paying for a huge load of channels I don't care about, but...

Yeah, I spent two hours with their techs getting them to turn on bridge mode and the wifi off. So it's as secure as I think they'll make it.

We're using a brand new Time Capsule for our network base station now.

#2 is what my mom did; it means she has like four networks from her house, which is really annoying.
