Saturday we were going to go to Haight Street to look for some Docs for Giuseppe and a new pair of shoes and clothes for me. Mind you, I had maybe 2 hours sleep after walking miles upon miles the day before

I had something to do with how sales people judge people by apperance to me and a friend.
i was an apprentice jockey and the guy I worked for owned winning race horses and a successful stud farm and riding school etc, etc, etc. he wanted to buy a new car and wanted something sporty so we went into a sport car dealership carrying a briefcase full of one hundred dollar bills. (I had never seen that amount of money before) The dealer took one look at us in our work clothes, overalls, boots etc and came over to us and said, "I need to ask you 'gentlemen'(really sarcastic tone) no to get too close to the cars and not to touch them." He then went away without asking did we want to look at anything in particular etc. He then came back and said, "I have to ask you both to leave as you do not belong in this shop and the type of cars we sell here. There is a secondhand dealership down the road."
I looked at my boss, he looked at me, we both grinned. My boss goes, "May i talk to to your boss?" The guy looked down his nose at us and goes, "He would tell you what I told you."
My boss went, "Get him for us please."
He huffed and then walked off to the back office.
His boss came out with him and was nice and polite. he asked us how he could help us etc. My boos looked at him, shook his hand, the dealer's boss shook my hand, not afraid to get dirty etc.
My boss walked over to a table, opened the case and said to the dealer's boss, "I was planning on spending about this much money here today, but I am not sure that this is my type of place."
he then told the dealer's boss what the salesman said, how he acted etc.
the boss went pale, walked stiffly over to the salesman, grabbing him by the arm. The tone he used, the strips he tore of the guy was amazing to watch.
he came back and told us if we would reconsider, he would deal with us personally and that the salesman would not be working there any more.
My boss accepted his apologies as the guy was generally crushed that someone in his employ was that rude and judgemental. he got leather chairs for us out of his office so we could sit. He got champange, strawberrys, and all this other stuff for us and even took us to lunch, paying for it.
he did all this and said, "Even if you do not see something you like here today, this is what i want to do for you to show you we are not all like him."
the boss ended up buying a Jag I think it was. The dealer let us take all the cars in the show room for a test drive, coming with us and showing us the sights.
it was awesome.
i get judged a lot by the way I look, even being follow by security guards when i go in shops.
i hate it that people think the job they have in the store you are in gives them the right to believe they are better than you.
I have heard so many stories like that. After we left that store, we started talking to an older woman about these goofy looking cars that you can rent in SF to sight see. Then I told her what had happened in the store. She told me a story about a friend of hers who works in some store in the same genre as Saks Fifth/Barney's...you know, high society. There was a scruffy black man who was looking around in the store. He had raggedy clothes, scruffy beard...he didn't look the part of one who would be shopping in a place like that. Well, that dude went up to a salesperson asking for help. The Salesperson was rude to the man telling him that he was busy and would be back to see if he neded help when he was done. The woman's friend went up to him and asked if he needed help. The man told her friend what had happened and he was astonished that no one had already come up to help him.
Come to find out, he spends half a million dollars a year, working ONLY with her friend since he was nice enough to look beyond his apearance and helped him. When he goes into the store and her friend isn't there and other people come up to help him, he asks for her friend and if he isn't there, he tells whomever is trying to help him that he will come back when her friend is there.
I too get followed in stores by security. It's lame how quickly people will judge you just by your apprearance. :/
The other thing that bothers me is those people who spray perfume without asking you first.
i have a huge allergy to alchol based things so when someone hits me with a spray of perfume, i break out in what looks like an acid burn.
One person once asked did i mind if she sprayed me.
I smiled, pulled out my trusty Zippo and answered, "Only if you don't mind if I step back and light this when you do."
I watched her think this over. You could practically see the gears turning over in her head. She put together the destructive possibility of flame and perfume meeting and for some reason she left me allone quite quickly.
The other one is those religious people who bellow at you and try and shove leaflets into your hand.
I have growled at many of these and it is always funny watching people run when they realize that you will actully bite them if they don't back off.
