So at 7am, i was waiting with my store merchandiser, shannon, and the other receiver, matt, for a manager to unlock the store and let us in. I was staring out the window of the entrance way when i noticed something fall straight down and land on the sidewalk.
could it be? naw.
but it was.
a bird had dropped straight out of the sky and landed on its back. We didnt know what to do, but we knew that runners stepping on it would be bad. So i went over and grabbed paper from my bag to kind of shoo its poor lil dead body out of the way of passers-by. But when i got close to it, i realized it was still alive. It was tiny. and very green. and its leg was hurt. I took out the surgical gloves that i keep in my bag (mever know when you'll need em) and picked the lil guy up. i was afraid of touching him because of his mother rejecting him. that and bird flu. i mean, come on, the bird dropped from the sky. So i pick him up and he doesnt resist. no biting. no clawing. no attempt to fly away. We assumed it was a pet.
keep in mind i know nothing about birds beyond the 14500 parakeets i had as a child. and reed's parrots.
We got inside and i tried to put it in a makeshift cage, but it wouldnt leave my hands. no matter what i tried, he stayed. Eventually it got scared (by my camera...oh me, always taking pictures) and it jumped, squeeked, and tried to fly...only to land on its back.
i got it in the cage and there it stayed till animal rescue came to pick it up. They said they would nurse the leg back to health, then take it to a park to see if it could learn to fly.
