“Why didn’t you tell me I loved you?”

Somehow, when Fred Astaire said that, a part of me swooned internally, and the rest of me felt like a silly fool for having neglected to inform him. Yet, when Gene Kelly uttered those exact same words, I was infuriated at his arrogance and felt like smacking him for his idiotic behavior that caused nothing but grief. Clearly, certain words just aren’t always good enough, no matter how sweet they might seem. Granted, both of their characters were arrogant pricks, but maybe what bugged me was that, whereas Astaire’s character never made pretensions of being otherwise, Kelly’s kinda did. It all depends on the individual and his past actions, apparently. So, if some guy makes the mistake of saying something like that to me after putting me through hell, he shouldn’t be surprised if instead of falling into his arms while laughing, I hurl something at him and scream at him to get out. And if someone as accustomed to being taken for granted as myself resorts to huge displays of temper out of pain and anguish, it’s a given more than that is going to be required to win me back. Gee, is it any wonder no one seems to care to?
