Within the past week two activist of an earlier generation passed away: Coretta Scott King and Betty Friedan. They were founders in a generation "stabilized" by restrictive race and gender roles. They spoke out at a time, when silence reined. Although irreplaceable, I wonder who will step up, who will pick of the flags of civil liberties and say "I go on in your name and in the name of democracy." Still there remains more marching, more voicing. And I know through the power of their words and actions, I walk taller with my head raised to be able to call myself an activist.
Mrs. King and Ms. Friedan, may a lifetime of fighting the good fight, a fight for rights of African Americans, womyn, gays, grant you a peaceful eternal rest.
