brown smoke hung over the mountains. it made the sunny san gabriels look dark and forboding, like mordor. as i drove further down the mountains that brown smoke cloud crept up the sky like a curtain. i watched the sun slide behind it and turn darker and darker orange and finally bright, bright red. like the reddest fucking red you ever saw. i left the blue skies behind in palmdale and ended up under a completely brown, overcast sky. soon it was too much even for the sun. the other side of santa clarita smoke rose white and wispy in the distance where the day before it had risen in angry, thick columns. it was like seeing into the future, post-nuclear blast, those wisps of weak, white smoke rising off a dead, black landscape under a brown sky.
