Thoughs on Fathers

Today Biv was going on and on about what she is doing with her father for Father's day. Then she paused and asked if this was the first or second year without my father for Father's day. I told her it's the first and she apologized for going on and on. Actually, the content of what she was saying wasn't bothering me, just the fact that she was going on and on.

I have to admit, this will be the first Father's day since I was a kid that I haven't had to worry about what to get for my Dad. Which in itself is a bit of a relief. Seriously. Last year almost qualified, but there was that whole 'this is your last Father's day' emotion that it was actually pretty bad. I don't even remember if I got my father anything more than a card. I mean, what do you get a dying man?
I've had some bouts of sadness here and there as the commercials approach, or like now, cause I'm talking about it, but in general I've been finding humor in the fact that I won't have to look for the perfect gift for a father who never wanted you to spend anything on him. Usually I ended up getting him gift certificates for hair cuts. He liked that. Practical. My brother often would get him something that he found fault with. I guess that was the nature of their relationship. My brother tried, my father found fault. Sad but true. I think my father appreciated it more when my brother mowed the lawn, or shoveled the driveway or something, but of course he then had to pay my brother for his efforts, so the gift value was gone. lol

Today we went to a former neighbor's new pool. They moved last fall and renovated their new home, so this was the first time I'd seen it. The house looks wonderful, and the new pool was great. Perhaps we will go back over the summer, although my neighbor will get jealous. He gets a bit upset if we don't use his pool. Its funny. I guess he just likes to have people actually make use of it. Which we do try to do.

It was wonderfully warm today. Not at all humid, but about 85. Perfect summery weather. Tomorrow, well, that's another story.

I was kissed by two dogs today. The first was at the gas station, the owner's little dog walked right up to me and started cleaning my face and ears. Very sweet little dog. The second was the pool owners dog, a very sweet cocker spaniel. Talk about the dog days of summer.

Also today, I was reading the paper on the porch and I head an weird noise. It dawned on me it was the hummingbird. I stayed still and he fluttered around but left without eating. I asked Himself what time it was; 6:30. Last night he came by at 6. I kept reading and sure enough he came back by a few minutes later, scoped things out, and apparently decided I was safe, so he settled down to eat for a few seconds. Progress!
