I forgot to post about the smell of spring that has finally arrived. I was reminded of it yesterday. About a week ago we got a rain and you could smell that earthy smell in the air, the one that really tells you that things are changing. Not that cold, snow is in the air feeling, but a warm, growing smell. So nice.
The birds are rebuilding their nest on the outside of the eve. They are scavenging material from the one inside the porch.
Also saw a small hawk or falcon hopping along the ground yesterday. I don't know if he was injured or if he was just hunting. He was looking in the bushes for small birds I assume, but they usually dive into them or at them. He didn't fly off when we were only 15 feet away from him. He looks like the same kind of bird we have nesting at the cemetery with her/his new mate.
And I almost hit a turkey yesterday. Same place as I've seen them cross before. Damn things. I'm going to get one soon I think.
My new helper told me she has ducks in her back yard. Two days ago she was out with her pet bunny and the ducks and a hawk swooped down, picked up the female duck and took it six feet off the ground before having to release it. Its' a good sized, probably pregnant female duck. I cant believe a hawk would go for it. Duck survived, but with some injuries. Hopefully it will be ok.
