Back on the Metro

Jun 30, 2008 21:30

I took the Metro to work this morning, which admittedly was a struggle. It’s been awhile and I’ve gotten used to sleeping in and later hours. In fact, last week’s attempt was a complete failure, as I pounded my clock every 9 minutes for “just a little more sleep.” But knowing that, I prepared ahead: charged up my phone, loaded up my iPod, and tucked Granta in my bag that had gone so long unread by my bedside.

So this morning, while I at least got in two good snoozes, I was still able to take a quick shower, iron a shirt, and make a double espresso (they don’t let you take coffee on the Metro).  I did get on the train a bit later than I would have liked, but made all the connections to get me to work on time. Once on the train though, I immediately remembered how much I preferred commuting this way. The internet on my phone, my iPod serving me a wake-up mix of James Bond theme, the Pogues, and the Propellerheads, I just smiled knowing I could just kick back and not think for awhile longer.

Tomorrow of course, is the real test. Can I make this a habit again? To help seal the deal, I picked up a pass for July. Unfortunately, it seems they are introducing a new fare system tomorrow, requiring a “smart card” of sorts which needs to be loaded with your fare. This meant standing in line for an hour at Union Station before I could go home. Still, I had my iPod and unheard podcasts of This American Life. So I waited, and smiled, knowing this time still would not be wasted.
