I don't really have much to say about this year. It has mostly involved me shuffling along only vaguely aware of passing events, and, more often than not, finding myself to be quite happy.
So, whatevs, some songs. Not the best songs of the year, or even songs that were released this year in some cases. Er, yes.
Mostly for dancing, because it is the best tonic. Or for just being drunk...
Battles - AtlasI think you need to have a shot of something before trying to dance to this.
The Mae Shi - Run To Your GraveBits of this kinda remind me of the music on an early 90s computer game. In a good way.
Late of the Pier - Bathroom GurgleFor every indie/electro/whatever night and bad dancing.
Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With YouDance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Poppy, in a vaguely shouty way.
Those Dancing Days - Those Dancing DaysI think this is twee girlband music, and I am troubled by twee often. However, it is irritatingly infectious.
M.I.A. - BoyzHow many no-money boyz are crazy? ... I still fucking love her.
Paul Simon - You Can Call Me AlIt is strange that I seem to hear this every time I go out, but a very good thing overall.
Rihanna & Jay Z - UmbrellaWell, obviously.
Architecture In Helsinki - Heart It RacesI love random keyboard sounds! I'm thinking of getting myself a keyboard. Hours of fun for all the family.
Beans on Toast - Binge DrinkingBeans on Toast has a song for every sin (even laughing gas.) Most of his million or so songs would be appropriate for this selection of nonsense. This is short and vaguely melancholic.
Beans on Toast - Fuck The Smoking BanOkay, it hasn't turned out quite as badly as I'd feared - I saw the smoking ban as falling down a dark hole of misery. Still, standing in freezing streets and gardens ain't fun. Thank God for lock-ins.
Kid Harpoon - Death of a RoseI think I actually became obsessed with this for quite a while. I still occasionally wander round my house singing it without realising what I'm doing. The melody and rhythm of 'Life has never been easier than this for me' are just so brilliant.
Lupen Crook - Cackle and the CrownHe's so fucking weird and so fucking good.
M.I.A. - Paper PlanesKala > Arular. True. This is well catchy.
Amy Winehouse - Tears Dry On Their OwnI still love you, Wino. She was proper robbed at the Mercury's, though the Klaxons' speech was hilarious.
Nic Dawson Kelly - Whitechapel MoonshineI LOVE his voice. Saw him at Nambucca some time several months ago and him being great was unexpected and lovely. Perfect for a Sunday evening slumped on their sofas.
Rum Shebeen - Lock a Monkey UpSouf London. Best accompanied by several bottles of Weston's Cider.
Kings of Leon - FansAnd those rainy days, they ain't so bad when you're the king. I love this album. But then I also like Razorlight's second album... But Knocked Up is incredible and Ragoo/Fans are a great pair of songs. I love guitars, like.
Interpol - Rest My ChemistryOur Love To Admire is a great name for an album. And it's so dark, like sitting alone in the early hours, twitching.
Arctic Monkeys - If You Found This, It's Probably Too LateThe first album was old before it arrived, but the second is compelling, and has cracking artwork. This is my ideal b-side: bitter, mental and very good.
The Good, The Bad and The Queen - Green FieldsI like the word elegy, so I'll say this is elegiac. 'I wrote this song, years ago, late at night, somewhere on the Goldhawk Road.' Fuck yes. It's all in the timing.
The Cribs - Our Bovine PublicThe Brothers Jarman are a splendid band. I've also lost count of the number of times I've watched the first Buzzcocks that Ryan was on. It just doesn't get old. And makes me warm to Ricky Wilson, strangely.
Baby shambles & Bert Jansch - The Lost Art of MurderBless his little Chandler/Orwell title for all us semi-well-read twits. I really like this, though. It's pretty and the guitar is excellent. I think it made me weep once. That said, most game shows etc make me cry half the time.
Ergh, gotta stop somewhere, or I'll continue to think of more all night. Anyway, to continue the serious tone for our conclusion, my embarrassing celeb crushes of the year include:
-Mark Ronson. He's a little cutie. Shame about the music that makes me want to TEAR MY FUCKING EARS OFF. The Radiohead one is my current least favourite.
-Daniel from the X Factor
-Craig Dean off Hollyoaks
-Lindsay Lohan. I was seriously overexcited about stalking her on myspace.
etc. Happy Christmas and that xx
