Well so far things are still pretty low profile at least internet wise. Haven't heard anything new, but it did start some people talking and there was a rather long and interesting discussion on Fanfiction in general at this address http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/007464.html#007464
It didn't get snarky or heated. Everyone seems to be minding their manners and the views and opinions were nice to read. However I belong to the AFF.Net yahoo group and mainly lurk, but there was some discussion about the authors who adamantly refuse to allow fanfiction of their works. At least two of the MODS of the list and AFF.Net got a little hostile and stated that they would not change their policies concerning Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton, both who have publicly and many times stated they do not support fanfiction of any kind. So the debate can get heated.
I agree with you, that it's a nice escape and fun to read and write. Some authors will argue that there is no educational value to writing fanfiction, but I disagree in that it's similar to the writing exercises in Creative Writing classes in both high schools and colleges.
I'm really hoping this dies down and Lucasfilms Ltd. quietly settles with the women. However I do have to ask WHAT WAS SHE THINKING? Ugh, stupid people continue to populate the earth and we can't stop them!
So here's to hoping that fanfiction can continue in the harmless way that it generally is now.
