Current events:
I think we are about to see some astronomic changes in our world now with the lastest developments in the news. First, with Terri Shiavo's death, I'm not really sure what this is goingto spell for our culture. Our society already has an unbelievably sketchy viewpoint of the dignity of the individual. With the Shiavo scandal, I'm afraid of what's going to happen next. One politian claimed that because Terri did not have "cognitive ability" anymore she was no longer human yet Terri could communicate with her parents and she could certainly feel the pain of being starved to death. I can't believe that even though she was so very wanted and loved by her parents she was killed by the state for "the right to die." By whose right are we talking about? I'm afraid this will open a floodgate and the first to suffer will be the handicapped because they lack that "cognitive ability" that makes it so easy for another to claim their life is worth less.
Then of course the death of John Paul II or Papa John as my friend Kate called him. He did so much to increase the respect for human life, the relations between men and women i.e. feminine and masculine geniuses, the firm unchanging morality of the Church, understanding of human sexuality. He reached out so much to various cultures and worked hard to bring down Communism and bring unity to the world.
And on the local front, there's a group working to shut down a porn shop that's right down the street from Ave Maria College. I was only on the street for about 30 minutes but if you ever want a reaction protest porn. For my time slot the feedback seemed 50/50. One lady thanked us for trying to make people aware of what porn does to marriages; she said her husband tried to get her to do porn and later tried to sell her to her father-in-law until she divorced him. A lady from a shop gave us juice to drink. One woman agreed with our sign "Porn Disrespects Women." But there was a group of EMU students on a porch across the street who were, um, less than suppportive. Interesting day.
