I have just finished an Urban Fantasy series written in 1st person.  As the series progresses, the protagonist keeps discovering new gifts/powers/talents, much like a "Mary Sue" in romance novels keeps becoming a more perfect version of a heroine, and that really bothered me.

It's the Fever "series" (and that term is used very lightly!) by Karen Moning. My complaint all along has been that it is one story broken up into five hardcover segments(at $25 a pop, good gig for the author!) Needless to say, her fans don't like me very much.

At one time, I thought the five segments should be tightly edited into one very long novel. Now that I've finished it, I don't think even that would be enough. Part of my problem is the book's inability to truly explain/define the alternate universe, since the reader is limited to the protagonist's POV.

I like your criteria. The ending wasn't unexpected, because the author promised her fans a HEA at the end. She does have a couple of twists at the end, including one which violates the laws of her AU (this kills me every time). She claims she had the entire story in her head from start to finish for over five years. This being the case, too bad she felt the need for so many plot devices.

I had recommended to readers on amazon.com to wait for the 5th segment, then read Fever as a whole. Now, I'm not sure I would recommend anyone read it.

Thanks, Eppie!!!
