I KNEW that Idol is not a show for anyone involved in the industry, especially in "indie" music. But I think that Adam Lambert is just the fucking hottest fag on the planet with a pretty baddass voice to back it up and I like Danny's gravelly cigarette voice and Alexis Grace is starting to remind me of Pink...or maybe even a little Haley Williams.
Tonight though I almost gave a standing ovation in my living room to Simon for the biggest faux pas EVER! And yet, it was truth. Giant truth. I hope to see his quote all over the net, in the news and in ever industry rag tomorrow morning:
"You can be artistic just not on this show!!"
Ok that said...performances? Please do not say Kris's name in the same breath as Jason Mraz. Jason can sing clearer stoned than Kris does straight. However that said...let's see how this kid does with some Starting Line, Jack's Mannequin/SoCo. Show me your stoner rock boy.
They don't get Meghan. Of course they don't. The judges have tunnel vision that seems to reside in 70's-80's pop/r&b. Meghan could have been the fourth Andrews Sister. She would so fit as a 40's or 50's USO singer.
Allison rocks but that's all she does. She will fail Broadway week and/or Country week. No versatility.
And finally Adam...hehehehehe I had fogotten about Black or White. I was expecting them to trip him up with Thriller. It would have been WAY to predictable and would have made him or broke him. So give him the song about being a minority and a wink to his "brothers". LOVE YOU!!! I still hope he gets bounced before the top 5 though so he comes out with his credibility. The guy is an established artist and does not belong on this show.
So did anyone else but me see the irony of Michael's big brother judging tonight? I think Randy was really having a tough time with this. Especially the really iconic songs.
I trolled some boards and now understand the premise of this show. People with no fucking music knowledge or taste. Ok, not everyone's cup of tea is a harder edge rock but that's what Adam did. Reminded me actually a bit of Chris Hall, Nathan Leone, and I hate to use the comparison...Gerard Way.
People, many of you are tone deaf. I can hear, painfully so, when someone is off pitch.
Understand that Idol hires shit sound techs cuz real ones do not want the stigma of working for the show. I've heard sound mixed better at outdoor festival shows than in this theater. Listen for the echo. It shouldn't be there. Especially in a theater that full. The bodies should absorb the sound. Also the mixes can be changed to make someone sound bad.
The judges are paid by 19. They're going to get behind the "artist" that the producers tell them to.
All I can figure is that the people watching for the most part think that Brittany Spears, Whitney Houston, Bono and Mick Jagger can actually sing/perform. Please let me take you to listen to some artists that you've probably never heard of and let you hear what good vocals and see what good stage presence is. Again...this is where people like Adam, Alexis, Meghan and Danny excel. They could suck ass but they know how to work a crowd. Credit I will give to current pop artists with real talent and ability? Justin Timberlake, Christina Aquilara, Beyonce and yes, Alex, I'm going to say this The Jonas Brothers. Listen if those boys can hold their own with Stevie Wonder I can't say they suck. Oh and Anoop? I adore you but you're no Patrick Stump. It is a minuscule few who should ever even try "Beat It" and there is only one other who nailed it that is not MJ.
Sadly Danny and Adam have stolen my heart and Alexis and Meghan have stolen my soul this season so for the second time ever, I will watch AI until they are gone.
