Okay I started out thinking this movie would be about as good as somewhere between the Dungeons and dragons movie and Lord of the Rings, then I saw Film 2006 panning and thought it would be awful. Went to see it and it turned out how I originally thought.
Is it enteertaining? Yes.
Is it good? No not really.
If you want a pretty mindless action movie with little depth and lots of special effects this is for you. However if you want something with more depth, well developed characters and stories avoid.
Another friend compared it to a fantasy version of StarWars. and that is fair, though it if far less well done. It has the juvinile nature Star Wars has and the high adventure. But the characters are a little 2 dimensional.
*WARNING POILERS* (Though I am sure you can guess most of them anyway)
It was also so full of the fantasy cliche's I could see every single one a mile off. Young farm lad ends up destined to save the world despite coming from simple peaceful folk. Parents left him and brought up by uncle. Older was once amazing warrior down and out who ends up taking the hero under his wing to teach him. Young Princess who the hero brashly against the advice of his mentor most go save. Hero nearly gets killed, mento shows last minute and takes the blow and dies. Hero rallies army against evil army. Yada yada yada.
Not just seen it all before. seen it all before time and time again in movies which either did it better or pretty awful cheesy fantasy and sci-fi.
Also felt it was too rushed. they did not allow time for you to get used to the characters and they hurried the story along. You cannot feel any loss when a character dies because you barely got to know him. You cannot get into the spirit of the action because its hurried and on minute he turns up at the stronghold the next h is suddenly leading an army.
You can tell a kid wrote this.
If there is a sequel I shall watch it. Its mindless entertainment and special effects. But its pretty forgetable cliche fantasy and certainly not worthy to even be compared to the likes of Narnia or Lord of the Rings.
I give this 5 stars out of 10.
