I went to the hospital twice when I was 2 and 5 years old because of Pneumonia. I had asthma that triggered the attack. My mom was worried sick about me and she'd get off work and sleep beside my bed in the hospital till I got better. That's why my mom was always overprotective and would tell me to change my shirt so that my back wouldn't get wet causing chills that could set it off.

Pneumonia causes phlegm and mucus to produce in large amounts because the body is trying to expel the bacteria and viruses that are there. This causes inflammation in the lungs because the air sacs working overtime trying to compensate for oxygen deficiency. There's blockage that makes it difficult to breathe.

I remember being a kid and would wake up wheezing and breathing hard because my windpipe was constricted. When you cough, your phlegm is dark green or brownish color. Usually the doctor can tell what kind of ailment you have by the expectorate.

Because your niece is 2 and a half, her lungs are still developing and the lung capacity for oxygen is smaller. Her lungs have to work harder. With fully developed humans, the lung capacity is greater so they can take on more air.

When a person has asthma, the breathing is constricted so it means that the lungs have to breathe harder to suck in more air. The air sacs that are working harder start to rupture become inflamed. The bacteria normally floating around in air molecules gets caught in your lungs and agitates those swollen lungs. It's an open wound that can breed.

It's like breathing through a straw. With a regular straw, you can breathe normally. Pneumonia is like breathing through one of those red tiny Coffee Stirs with only two tiny holes. Try putting the coffee stir in your mouth, plug your nose, and attempt to siphon oxygen through those two tiny holes of that tiny straw. That's how hard it is to breathe.

It's not the nose that is congested. It's in the throat. That's why they say that you should drink a lot of liquids in order to loosen the phlegm. Right now, her system is extremely weak, which is why it was a necessary to take her to the hospital so that they could nurse her back to health.

I'm sure the Doctors are doing everything they can to give her the appropriate treatment that will ease her breathing and bring her back to normal. It's always unfortunate when it's young children who go through this.

Best Wishes.
