...
Marie Milligan is my hero, she was the first hero in my life as a child, I've revered her since before I can remember - all the memories flood back and I am thankful I was blessed with such an amazing grandmother.
I'm beyond glad I took the time to visit with her often this last year, no regrets and I was able to tell her over and over again how much I love, respect and honor her.
I thought waiting for the phone call to say goodbye was hard, but waiting for the final call to say it's all over is much, much worse. I want to be sitting with her, letting her know its ok. I was able to do so for a few hours today, before the storm blew in and we had to go. She blessed me with a moment of lucidity and told me "I love you too, sweet sugar." I just hope she passes away easily, swiftly and painlessly in her sleep while dreaming of meeting Papaw on the other side. She missed him terribly after he died in 1995, he was her savior, her rock, her best friend and her soul mate.
Together they showed me what kindness, compassion, calm sweetness and a good heart look like, they gave me sanctuary from the chaos of my father's wrath and my mother's depression. They weren't perfect, but they were the closest to it I've ever seen and I'm so thankful that they were a major part of my life from the start.
I'll miss you Granny, I'm glad you had such a full life and I hope that your life on the other side of the veil is even better.
Thank you for helping to mold the best parts of me, without you I wouldn't have the big heart, southern gentility or half the life skills I possess today. Thank you for believing in me always, even when I was out of control and angry at the world, you never left my side.
I'm proud to be your granddaughter.
