Kilmainham was built in 1787 and was used until 1924. The oldest parts of it made my heart go out to those who suffered being contained in those walls. The small white squares above and on either side of the main entrance are all that remains of the public gallows which used to hang there. Though, during the Great Famine, people would do the craziest stuff to be put in there - just so that they would have at least one guaranteed meal a day. the youngest inmate was a 5yr old who stole turf for food (as in grass and the not the kind you smoke.) The most famous inmates were the 13 leaders of the Easter Uprising of 1916 - who were all executed by firing squad. The black crosses in the courtyard at the end of this part are where the 13 leaders were shot dead.
Across the street is a sculpture, it's extremely sad and politically poignant.
