Magic derived from what? Gods? Items? Yourself? It's hard to believe that 'magic' is all there is to it.

Humans and elves are linked to a realm known as the Fade. It's where our dreams come from, where we visit when we sleep. Magic comes from the Fade.
And some of us are born with the ability to manipulate the energy of the Fade as we like. Mages can summon the elements, heal wounds, things like that.

I am a mage, yes. [An apostate mage, at that.] The Veil here... the separation between the worlds... is different. Something is blocking it. I can still use my magic. But it's weakened.

[Shal: not really surprised in the least. He's experienced the blockage himself, after all. But if one thing is genuine, it's his relief in the fact that it's not just him.]
That's weird that some of your magic still gets through, though. I wonder if the barrier is just weak, or if it lets some filter through intentionally.

I can't be certain. I was never one for offensive magic to begin with, and here... it's all but gone.
