You end up with a lot of free time when you're stuck here, don't you? I've been reading the old journal entries for entertainment mostly, but I'm starting to feel like a shut-in, so I thought I'd ask everyone a question to get to know you better ( Read more... )

What do you mean, 'how does it work'? It's magic. Everyone knows how that works. Even dwarves.

And they're about as magical as their rocks.

Magic?

[He puts on a thoughtful frown.]

Magic derived from what? Gods? Items? Yourself? It's hard to believe that 'magic' is all there is to it.

[Oh, right, not everyone is from Thedas.]

Humans and elves are linked to a realm known as the Fade. It's where our dreams come from, where we visit when we sleep. Magic comes from the Fade.

And some of us are born with the ability to manipulate the energy of the Fade as we like. Mages can summon the elements, heal wounds, things like that.

The Fade, huh? I've never heard of it. And you can still reach it here, to power your magic?

Ah, assuming that you're one of those people who're born able to use it, that is.

It seems like hardly anyone here has.

I am a mage, yes. [An apostate mage, at that.] The Veil here... the separation between the worlds... is different. Something is blocking it. I can still use my magic. But it's weakened.

Ah, really?! Something about the castle blocks it?

[Shal: not really surprised in the least. He's experienced the blockage himself, after all. But if one thing is genuine, it's his relief in the fact that it's not just him.]

That's weird that some of your magic still gets through, though. I wonder if the barrier is just weak, or if it lets some filter through intentionally.

That's what I'm thinking, yes.

I can't be certain. I was never one for offensive magic to begin with, and here... it's all but gone.

What kind of magic do you do? If I'm not being rude asking so much.

I'm a healer. I put have a tendency to shove broken things back together and magic them to good health again.

Ah, really? That must be really useful! To be able to avoid doctors like that, I'm jealous.

Being able to avoid doctors implies there are any available. Non-mage healers are expensive in Kirkwall.

[Which was a part of why he was down in Darktown, working for free.]

Good ones are expensive anywhere. But life is more valuable than money, right?

[Or at least, his is. Strangers were another story.]

That would depend upon the life in question.

[That gets a genuine laugh. Shal likes you, Anders.]

True enough!

I'm Shalnark. What's your name?
