This is lovely, Katie, as you know. And bringing Castiel in adds the wonderful extra layer -- taking this private, vulnerable moment between the boys and giving it an observer, someone outside of the thick of it who can make sense of it, much in the way we do as readers, yet with his own personal biases. GAH. I LOVE CASTIEL.
Yeah. It's late, I'm sleepy, but you're awesome.

This is very touching. Slashing brothers aside (in my case, not yours :-) I love the way you convey their bond and how Dean is in a very dark place. This part really got it: Kissing at the area above Dean’s ear, Sam continues to mutter cheap comforts and sappy promises that would on any other occasion earn him a beating. Tonight they sound too honest-reliable...The words lodge in his throat, because some small part of him recognizes that all he wants right now is bullshit, finding reality too hard to face.
I really dig the image of Castiel watching them, confused...his own uncertainty and ultimate resignation that he is no longer needed. Sad for my Castiel/Dean fix but quite moving all the same.

Hee! I'm pleased that you liked this so much, and that I've made a sappy moment believable for the boys. Sorry I'm so mean to Castiel...I'll write him some porn soon to make it up to him/you ;)
