I LIIIVE. 8D Yeah. I've basically been hybernating for a year in my little coccoon of homework and writer's block. 8D But now that it's summer (<3) I was thinking of coming back + I have a new ficlet and
poftd told me to post it here so she can flaunt that it was her idea so uh long story short hi I'm back. 8D;
Sooo without further ado (uggh that sounds like soap) here's a fic. 8D And I need new userpics. D:
Title: Reassurance
Rating: PG-13?
Word Count: 1,262
Pairing(s): Rolo and Lelouch. Not quite Rolo/Lelouch. But whatever.
Warnings: SPOOOOOILERS. And please excuse the random “nii-san’s”, but I can’t imagine Rolo saying “brother” in English. Deal. Probably kinda OOC on Lulu’s part, too, but what can I say, here he is a plot device. 83
Notes: Uhhh, certain moment written with the liberty that seems to have been granted through the series when Lelouch took Shirley’s memories. Inspired by
poftd's prediction for the end of the Rolo + Lulu relationship. :D
SPOILERS: R2 turn 13. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
Disclaimer: Characters belong to CLAMP and Bandai, our eternal tormentors.
When Viletta came back to check on him, he was still engrossed with his work; the material that Lelouch had promised to help him with after checking on the progress with the train.
“Lelouch didn’t come back yet?” Viletta asked with a hand on her hip, looking around the underground command center. She had been informed, of course, of Lord Jeremiah’s dramatic “change of heart” upon his meeting with Lelouch, but it still seemed rather too sudden and, as it were, the ex-Prince had yet to return to the academy.
Rolo flipped a page nonchalantly, never looking up; his cell phone sat on the table in front of him. “Nii-san will be back,” he said, eyes traveling along the page but mind absorbing nothing. “He can handle coming back from the mall on his own.”
Viletta hesitated for a moment, as if trying to decide whether or not to add something, but shook her head and left. Again the room was empty save for him and a silent phone.
Rolo glanced up once the door closed. Nii-san is taking a while to return, though, he thought, then dismissed the idea. The threat-all threats had been eliminated. Lelouch couldn’t just waltz right out of a supposedly-evacuated building without arousing suspicion. It could take some time.
He frowned and stopped trying to comprehend what he read.
As someone with an aspect of time under his control, he really did not like waiting.
When the door opened again he expected Viletta to finally ask what she’d been hesitating with for the past few hours, so he only half looked up. Then he saw who came through the door and forgot about his irritation.
“Nii-san!” he said brightly and turned fully in his chair. Subconsciously he reached for his cell-phone in the meantime and fingered his locket. “I’m glad you’re alright. Even Viletta-sensei was worried. Why did you take so long?”
Lelouch’s eyes were concealed by damp, black bangs; evidently, despite the rain, he’d walked all the way back to the academy. Nii-san shouldn’t do that, thought Rolo. It will over-exhaust his body. The older boy dragged his feet across the room, leaned against the table for support.
Rolo leaped to his feet and hurried to pull out a chair for his “brother.” “Hold on, Nii-san, here, sit down.” Lelouch sank into the chair and Rolo sat across from him, lowered his neck a little to try and peek into Lelouch’s face; Lelouch was completely silent. Rolo panicked a little. “What is it, Nii-san? Did something happen? You weren’t hurt, right? Shall I go call for Sayoko? Or do you want-”
“Tell me. Rolo.” The younger Lamperouge silenced when the elder finally spoke. “Lelouch Lamperouge… no. Zero. He is one of the most powerful men in the world, is he not?”
Rolo opened his mouth, found his mouth was dry.
Lelouch didn’t seem to need any more encouragement, though. “And Suzaku Kururugi is one of the best-skilled Knightmare Pilots.”
Rolo closed his mouth and nodded; his fist clenched on his cell-phone. “He has been a hindrance,” Rolo murmured, still watching his brother. “But there will definitely be a way to get rid of him.”
“Then tell me, Rolo,” Lelouch said, so quietly that Rolo had to lean in closer. “What good are the most powerful man and the strongest Knight if they can’t even protect one girl?”
Rolo inhaled sharply, ears drumming. “What are you talking about?” he breathed. “I thought Kururugi-”
Lelouch’s fists clenched and unclenched and, for an instant, Rolo glimpsed a tiny contact lens in Lelouch’s left hand. He looked back up, the drumming in his ears turning thunderous.
“Tell me, Rolo,” Lelouch said again with his voice growing stronger. He lifted his head, rainwater mixing with the falls of tears streaming from his eyes. His jaw was set with the effort of restraining the tears.
And his left eye glowed red.
“Tell me,” he said, “why did Shirley die?”
“Nii-san, don’t-!” Rolo cried.
Suddenly he seemed to blink and the scene changed. Not much; he and his brother were still sitting where they had been and his locket was clutched firmly in his fingers. But Lelouch’s tear-ridden expression had changed.
It was horrorstruck.
“Shirley…” he whispered and Rolo’s insides churned. “You… you killed… Shirley…?”
Rolo was surprised only for a moment, then gathered his senses again quickly. How does he know? He didn’t know a minute ago. It must have been Geass. There’s nothing to do about that.
He looked down at his hands, turning the locket in his fingers so it caught the light and gleamed. “She remembered everything, Nii-san,” he muttered. “She knew you were Zero. She was a threat.” He raised his gaze back to his brother. The only “family” he’d ever had to protect. “I got rid of her, though, Nii-san. Now there’s no danger for your secret.”
Lelouch’s eyes widened for a moment-the red one sparking ominously-and then suddenly his features scrunched, dark with anger. “Shirley was a friend,” he said, almost a growl. “She was yours, too, and tried to include you in everyth-”
“She remembered Nunnally, too,” Rolo interrupted and the surprise was evident again in Lelouch’s eyes; the tears that had been pooling there started falling again. “If she knew about Nunnally, she could have destroyed us. But don’t worry; I can make everything alright again.”
His eye burned red.
Lelouch’s lips parted. “Wha-”
Rolo activated his Geass.
Lelouch was frozen mid-sentence, though the last few tears slipped from his cheeks and onto his collar. Rolo watched his brother’s motionless face for a moment, then sighed.
“I’m sorry, Nii-san,” he murmured and reached into his school uniform, produced his knife from the folds. “But I promised you I’d always be with you. This is the best way…”
And without the faintest trace of hesitation, Rolo dug his knife into his brother’s chest.
Sighing again, Rolo placed his knife on the table and withdrew the Geass.
Lelouch gave a little gasp of pain and looked down, saw the blood staining his shirt. He blanched and tipped sideways, off the chair and onto the floor.
Rolo threw himself onto his knees and picked up his brother’s head, cradled it in his arms. Lelouch’s lips fluttered as if trying to speak, eyes torn open with disbelief; they no longer appeared to be able to see the other boy who was so devoutly striving to make his brother more comfortable. Finally he murmured, “Rolo… you…?”
Rolo wiped away the last of the tears from his brother’s eyes. “Don’t worry,” he whispered. “I’ll protect you, Nii-san. No one will harm us.”
Lelouch’s eyes flickered. “Nunna…ly…” he breathed. Then his head fell sideways, eyes still open with all light in them extinguished.
The room was as still as the late Britannian Prince’s-Zero’s heart. Rolo studied his brother’s face for a few moments then, carefully, lifted his brother’s body toward him and embraced his still-warm form. He could yet smell the soap Lelouch had used that morning, mixed in with the faint traces of rainwater. The blood that gushed out steadily from Lelouch’s chest stained Rolo’s uniform, as well, seeped through his clothing toward his skin, though he hardly noticed it.
It felt right, to hold his brother like that. Like a confirmation that now, no one could separate them. Not even Nunnally.
Rolo buried his face in Lelouch’s collar and breathed into it. “Don’t worry,” he murmured and held his brother close. “I’ll always be here to protect you. Nii-san…”
