I think it means going around to people's houses singing Christmas carols for money.

Is there a Jewish equivalent to Wassling? Like going around and singing Channukah songs to people? And if not, doesn't that mean that Wassling is anti-Semitic?

And by the way -- wonderful paragraph. I remember one thing that struck me was the way that Darnton considered the past a foreign country, whereas M. thought that trends begun in the past are still continuing and influencing us today.

I'm so going to use something like what you just said in my paper. Thanks.

Wassling is only antisemitic if wasslers go up to homes they know are Jewish, start wassling, and refuse to leave, accusing the household of being stingy.

I think it's actually spelled 'wassailing' It's kind of like going christmas caroling, except you go around to all of your friends houses singing and they're supposed to let you in and feed you cookies and let you drink all their spiked egg nog, and then they join you and you head off to the next friend's house. Really, it's just an excuse to reel drunken through the streets with a herd of your friends while singing.
