Where is my voice?

Music has become questions to me- courtesy of Balderston, I assure you. I have always played the cello, and mostly because I did it well. It's been what I do - I tried tap, ballet, soccer, math olympiad - but cello was the only thing that stuck. The only reason I can see why, is because I was decent at it. Apparently, neither of us lingers here very long or frequently, but I wanted to respond. Gosh what a great post.
Unfortunately, 90% of the people you hear and meet are "craftsmen:" that is, they reproduce the notes effectively enough to make a living doing so.
Very few are musicians.
I'm a musician, because 1) I feel and 2) I can express that feeling. and 3) I know technically how to do so.
The cello is merely a medium. If you control the medium, you are a craftsman, but not yet a musician... what comes next is the plateau that most don't reach, and that is the feeling...
what do you feel when playing the slow movement of the kabalevsky? what does it mean? Or the first movement of the Shostakovich?
G B SHaw said "it is feeling that sets us thinking and NOT thinking that sets us feeling." To intellectualize a piece eliminates the feeling of it, but if you feel it first, then you can analyze why.
By the same logic, if you understand your feelings, you can define how to express them musically, and THAT is what most players do not do.
Sarah Chang is a terrible musician. Most modern violinists are terrible musician, because they merely reproduce. When it says get louder, they do so, or get softer, they do so, speed up, slow down, bouncey bounce, legato legato. they obey, perfectly, all the commands of the music, but because they are not feeling anything except the mechanism of music, they fail.
Write back or post something, I'm interested in what has happened since may.
God Bless
Philip
